#Bougainville Remembrance Day
17th May 1990: the Bougainville Interim Government (BIG) unilaterally declared the independence of the Republic of Bougainville, proclaimed in response to a naval blockade announced by PNG PM Diro on 2 May.
Under the slogan “From Sacrifice to Sovereignty,” ABG President Toroama said: “I would like to declare to you today that our second cry for Independence on May 17th [...] will be answered with the declaration of our independence on September 1st 2027.”

Berlin, 6. April 1886: Herbert von Bismarck, Unterstaatssekretär im Auswärtigen Amt und der britische Botschafter Edward Malet unterzeichnen eine Erklärung zur Abgrenzung der deutschen und britischen Interessensphären im westlichen Pazifik.
Wie auch immer der Unabhängigkeitsprozess Bougainvilles ausgehen wird: Die Wurzeln des späteren Konflikts wurden vor genau 140 Jahren im Auswärtigen Amt in Berlin gelegt.
In a separate statement, ABG President Ishmael Toroama declared: "Above all, do not lose hope. Our people have endured war, volcanic eruptions, and cyclones far greater than this. We are resilient, and we will overcome this challenge together."
