Can we build a real #Italian#opensource#LLM, with the contribution of a large community of volunteers who provide not only code, but also compute resources and data?
This morning, thinking about #Emma, about the initial enthusiasm followed by disappointment with the result, I wondered whether a community-driven initiative might work better.
The questions to ask are: why, how, and who.
Why.
Even though there are already quite a few similar initiatives, building LLMs is an important strategic competence.
The United States and China are already far ahead, with companies, research, infrastructure, and distributed know-how. In France we have Mistral, and there is also the Swiss project Apertus, which is the one that inspires me the most.
Whether we like it or not, this is a capability that Italy should also develop. And it does not have it. There is a reason why.
Italian data, for a start, of course, because we have a unique culture that is worth distilling into an AI. But not only that.
How.
Large compute resources and a lot of data are needed. An individual or a small company will struggle.
But a large number of volunteers could make the miracle happen. Today, new LLMs are trained starting from existing LLMs using distillation techniques. Volunteers can do the work of collecting and cleaning these data.
Training requires significant resources, but distributed training tools exist. A bit like Seti@Home.
Here too, volunteers can contribute by renting GPUs, offering their own PCs, or convincing their gamer friends to use unused machine time to contribute to the project.
For inference, of course, I am thinking of DwarfStar by Antirez, and I will say no more.
Who.
It takes a community of volunteers. And it takes someone to launch the project, perhaps someone who has already done open source projects and managed to release working software.
And here, remembering https://t.co/CkqVKwM98R and Apache OpenServerless, my ears started burning.
Uh oh... I think it is up to me to try...
So I am trying.
But I am not launching the project. I am launching a WhatsApp chat to talk about it. Let's see what happens.
