In this recent webinar, R. Bryan Ormond, Ph.D. dove into the science and safety considerations behind transitioning to non-PFAS firefighter protective gear.

Trump's EPA just moved to reverse state and local bans on toxic "forever chemicals" that can lead to birth defects and cancer.

@CarolinaJournal Am I missing something? The bill, as written, says nothing about giving tax dollars to anyone. Charging people in-state tuition is not the same as paying someone's tuition. This would apply to undocumented people who have been residents in NC at least two years.
"Over 80% of women in the fire service have reported their gear not fitting properly. Is ill-fitting gear leading women in the fire service to a higher risk of cancer?" - Dr. Bryan Ormond, Associate Professor, @NCState presents on Firefighter PPE & Exposures

I feel incredibly fortunate to work with and for the brave men and women in the fire and emergency services. I will never stop researching, educating, advocating, or fighting for every one of you. Thank you for all that you do to keep all of us safe. #firefighter
It was an absolute honor, privilege, and a highlight of my career to be invited to speak on the State of Science regarding Firefighter PPE and Exposures at the 2024 U.S. Fire Administrator's Summit on Fire Prevention and Control this week.

We continue to work to separate the terms "firefighter" and "cancer" for good. While it may seem insurmountable, we owe it to every firefighter to aim that high. If we can stop even one firefighter's family from hearing that devastating diagnosis, it will have all been worth it.
@Di_Cotter@SenMikeMoore@MassAGO @DuPont_News If I have to be the one to ask the difficult questions about trade-offs in exposure to PFAS and the performance of the gear, then I’ll do that to ensure that firefighters have the information, so that they can make informed decisions on how to transition safely.
@Di_Cotter@SenMikeMoore@MassAGO @DuPont_News My primary concern in research will always be the health and safety of firefighters. My group works with the aim of separating the terms “firefighter” and “cancer” for good. Our track record reflects that and every firefighter that we work with to achieve this goal knows that.
@Di_Cotter@SenMikeMoore@MassAGO @DuPont_News @Di_Cotter I also talked with the reporter in-depth about this topic and how we need to transition safely, but I don't have control over the short clip used in the final piece. It is always hard when the discussion has to be cut down and over-simplified for a brief news story.
@Di_Cotter@SenMikeMoore@MassAGO @DuPont_News @Di_Cotter I understand where you are coming from, but neither I, my students, nor my lab are funded or have been funded by DuPont or any industry to work on PFAS topics. I've tried to be clear every time this claim has been thrown out.
Today (3/21) is #WorldDownSyndromeDay2024. This is a very special day for our family as we celebrate our son, Mace. In the spirit of this great community, I challenge everyone to be kind, to be a good human, and never limit someone by the expectations that you place on them.
On March 27, the Fire Protection Research Foundation will host a webinar discussing a @FEMA grant project focused on enhancing fire investigators understanding of exposure mitigation strategies. Register to attend here: https://t.co/dml19ReEMB
@FortenberryTj@mullins_pffpnc@IAFFofficial@PFFPNC In 2014-2016, through a DHS-funded project, we developed a smoke-resistant turnout ensemble and subcontracted LION to manufacture and transition the new suit to a commercialized product so it could get to firefighters and mitigate exposures to smoke and soot.
@FortenberryTj@mullins_pffpnc@IAFFofficial@PFFPNC My PFAS research and most other PPE topics are funded from federal or state government sources. We typically have technical panels made of firefighters, fire service organizations, test labs, subject matter experts, and industry to provide representation to all perspectives.
