Yes, absolutely! Michael will meet, work alongside, and even come face-to-face with some very significant historical figures along the way... but I’m definitely not telling you who. 😂 That would be wandering dangerously into spoiler territory!
What makes it interesting is seeing how these historical figures react to Michael and the Black Watch, especially when they witness tactics, discipline, and ways of fighting that are completely unlike anything seen on a Civil War battlefield before.
Some encounters may become alliances. Others... well, let’s just say not everyone who notices Michael Reeves and his men is going to be pleased they’re there. 👀
You’ll have to keep reading to find out who crosses paths with the Black Watch!
History remembers generals, battles, and victories.
The Black Watch remembers the people who paid the price.
Black Watch: Warrior Ethos begins with Michael Reeves, a man torn from his own time and thrown into the opening chaos of the American Civil War. Survival is only the beginning. What follows is the birth of a brotherhood built around one promise:
No one left behind.

That was probably one of the hardest parts to keep straight, because the historical thread Michael Reeves comes from is not exactly our own history.
Once Michael and the Black Watch begin operating during the Civil War, everything starts to unfold differently. They are using modern combat tactics, small-unit movements, battlefield discipline, intelligence gathering, and fighting techniques that simply had never been seen on a Civil War battlefield before. When Confederate forces encountered them in certain battles, they had absolutely no frame of reference for what they were facing. In many cases, they simply didn’t stand much of a chance.
The key for me was remembering that Michael isn’t actually breaking his own timeline. Every battle he influences, every decision he makes, and even the creation of the Black Watch under Lincoln was already part of the history of the world he originally came from.
So there is no original timeline that gets erased and replaced. Michael grew up in a world shaped by events that, unknowingly, he himself helped create.
That’s the strange beauty of the whole thing. He thinks he has fallen into history, when in reality, he has always been part of it.
Thank you! That’s exactly what I wanted Michael to feel like. He isn’t some grand architect of history, he’s a soldier trying to survive and make sense of what’s happening around him.
The really interesting part is that Michael originally comes from an elite military unit called the Black Watch. Then, after being thrown back into the Civil War, he eventually ends up creating the Black Watch himself under orders from Abraham Lincoln.
So the whole thing becomes one enormous circle. The unit Michael came from only exists because he went back in time and created it in the first place. From his point of view, though, he never realizes any of that. He simply believes he’s living through history as it happens.
Mapping the timeline took a lot of work because I had to make sure everything connected properly, especially across real historical events, but once I understood that closed-circle idea, the entire story really began to fall into place.
Haha, exactly! 😂 He probably had more than a few mornings where he thought, “You know what? Staying in bed really was the better option.”
Honestly, I’ve always loved history, and the idea started with a simple question: what would an ordinary man actually do if he suddenly found himself thrown back in time?
Then the idea grew. What if he began influencing events without ever realizing that the history he was “changing” was actually the very history that had always existed and had already created the future he came from?
Once I had that concept, Michael started to make sense as a military man. He needed the skills to survive that world, but I didn’t want him to just be a soldier dropped into the Civil War. I wanted him to live there, fall in love, build relationships, meet people like Abraham Lincoln, suffer losses, make impossible decisions, and slowly become part of the history surrounding him.
The fascinating part for me is that Michael never sees himself as some great architect of history. He’s simply trying to survive, protect people, and do what he believes is right, while history almost seems to fall into place around him.
And that’s really where Michael Reeves was born.
@NoodleNibble Haha, exactly! 😂 Michael Reeves didn’t get plot armor. He got “welcome to 1860, here’s a rifle, a collapsing nation, and absolutely no instruction manual.”
Poor man probably spent half the Civil War thinking, “I really should’ve stayed home today.”
Spoilers… but I’ll warn you now, it’ll make you cry. 😢
There is one character whose loss absolutely broke my heart to write. I’d spent years with him, watched him grow, sacrifice, love, fight, and become such a huge part of the Black Watch story that saying goodbye felt strangely personal.
I can’t tell you who without giving away something enormous. All I’ll say is this: when you reach that moment, you’ll understand why it had to happen… but you probably won’t forgive me for it.
That weight changes everything for Michael.
At first, “no one left behind” is a promise. Then it becomes a burden. Every person he cares about gives that promise more meaning, but also makes it more dangerous, because the more he loves, the more he has to lose.
His relationships deepen because people begin to trust him with their lives, but that trust also isolates him. He starts carrying decisions no one else can fully understand, especially when saving one person may put many others at risk.
And the cruelest part is that some of the people closest to him eventually become the reason the code is tested hardest.
That’s where Michael really begins to change.
History was never meant to survive the Black Watch.
Black Watch: Warrior Ethos begins with one man, one impossible journey, and a code that will outlive generations:
No one left behind.

That “no one left behind” ethos comes from somewhere very real for me. I bore witness to a friend passing in Afghanistan, and that moment has never truly left me.
The promise that no one should be abandoned, forgotten, or left alone when everything falls apart became part of the heart of Black Watch. For Michael Reeves, the catalyst is deeply personal: he is thrown into a world and a history he never expected to become part of, and he is forced to decide what kind of man he will be when walking away would be easier.
From there, “no one left behind” stops being just a military principle. It becomes a promise, and promises like that always carry a cost.
History remembers the battles.
The Black Watch remembers the people.

Thank you! I’m looking forward to chatting more too. Fair warning, though, my writing process is a little bizarre. 😂 I usually write the ending first.
I like to know exactly where the story is going and what emotional punch I want the final pages to deliver. Then I work backwards, building the characters, choices, sacrifices, and twists that eventually lead them there. With Black Watch especially, it helps me plant little details early on that become much more important later.
Once I’m finished with work, I’ll message you properly and tell you more about how the stories come together. Just remember… no spoilers! 😂
Apologies! I may have missed your DM. I’ll check Twitter and message you back once my workday is over. And absolutely, no spoilers! 😊 I’m really glad the heart I put into these characters comes through. I’d love to chat more about the writing process and how the Black Watch stories come together.
