BASARWA ELDER PITSENG GAOBEREKWE’S BURIAL ENDS THREE-YEAR LONG WAIT

After enduring three years of hardship, the long fight for Pitseng Gaoberekwe’s burial rights has finally come to an end.

Speaking at his maiden State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko promised a dignified burial for Pitseng at his ancestral land in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR). Under Boko, the new government has vowed to respect human rights, including those of minority and marginalized groups.

For three years, Gaoberekwe’s body remained in a mortuary as his family refused to bury him outside the CKGR. The family was entangled in a protracted legal battle with the previous government, a matter that eventually reached the Court of Appeal. The apex court ruled against Gaoberekwe’s family.

The new government, under President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, announced its decision to abandon the Court of Appeal’s judgment, allowing Gaoberekwe to be buried in Metsiamanong, his ancestral home within the CKGR.

President Boko reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to human rights and respecting indigenous traditions, adding that the state would cover all mortuary fees to relieve the family of financial strain after the prolonged dispute.

The late elder’s body was transported from Ghanzi to the CKGR on December 9 and has been laid to rest today, December 10—International Human Rights Day. This decision reflects a renewed focus on human rights and justice for the Basarwa under the new leadership.

Boko, Ndaba, and Ministers Arrived at CKGR Burial

President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe, and their cabinet ministers have arrived at Metsiamang in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) for the burial of Pitseng Gaoberekwe.

Gaoberekwe will be laid to rest tomorrow, on International Human Rights Day.

The funeral is expected to be attended by, among others, senior government officials, human rights activists, and the general public.

Industries Familiarization Tour in Selibe Phikwe

Yesterday, I had the privilege of embarking on an industries familiarization tour in the Selibe Phikwe region. The visit included stops at Dikgatlhong Dam, BCL Mine, and Selibe Phikwe Citrus, where I gained valuable insights into their operations, contributions, and challenges.

•Dikgatlhong Dam: Located near Robelela, this impressive structure holds a capacity of 400 million cubic meters of water, contributing significantly to providing safe drinking water nationwide. The dam also has the potential to boost regional economies through opportunities in tourism, manufacturing, and other sectors.

•BCL Mine: A tour of key facilities, including Shaft 3 and the Open Pit mine, provided valuable insights into the mine’s current state and its potential to contribute to the region’s economic growth as we pursue bold reforms.

•Selibe Phikwe Citrus: Joining a historical tradition of agricultural excellence in Phikwe, this operation demonstrates the region’s capacity to harness its agricultural potential and drive economic diversification through high-quality exports.

This tour aligns with our government’s commitment to economic revitalization as we work towards reforms that will enable us to achieve our national goals. The industries in Selibe Phikwe reflect the potential for growth, innovation, and job creation that will benefit our nation.

During his visit to Selibe-Phikwe, Boko also officiated the International Anti-Corruption Day event.

Boko’s visit comes at a time when the SPEDU region faces significant economic uncertainty. Could this visit reignite optimism for the region’s future?

A Return To My Roots

Today, I had the honor of holding my first Kgotla meeting in Mahalapye, the place where I was born and raised. In our culture, it’s important to return to your roots and share the news of any achievements with those who raised you, your elders. I know they prayed hard for this day. I went to ask them to not only celebrate , but rather a call for continued prayers and guidance as I lead the country.

I am confident that the leadership chosen will fulfill their promises. The work is already underway. As you may have heard, even before our pledges are formalized into law, some companies are already stepping up to provide people with the salaries they deserve.

Meeting students from my former schools Tamocha Primary School and Madiba Secondary School was especially meaningful, as it reminded me of my humble beginnings and reignited the purpose behind my leadership. I am President not because I am above anyone, but because I believe in the strength and potential of us all. I was once them, a village boy with dreams only travelled through books.

Thank you to my community in Mahalapye and to all of Botswana. As our culture teaches, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I belong to all Batswana, and together, we will make a better, more equitable country for everyone.
