If you loved taking new classes every semester in law school, you’d love appellate practice, because in law school you paid for that opportunity, but as an appellate lawyer someone else pays you to do the same thing.
Learning a completely new area of law again, and it's so much fun. #AppellateTwitter.
{No, transforming this learning into a brief is not gonna be fun}

@E_A_Young When individual CA4 judges are feeling ill, they have come down and greeted counsel without shaking hands. I expect CA4 will all do something like that.
@BobLoeb @RuthanneDeutsch Agree on the leatherleaf mahonia, but watch out for sharp leaves. Deer have not eaten our dwarf Japanese maple, catmint, or butterfly bushes (which grow large and bloom in late summer). They also ignore marigolds we plant each year.
@RuthanneDeutsch 1. Invest in deer-resistant plants. Sprays and scents require constant reapplication. Miss one and the deer win.
2. I mulch in Mar/Apr, and apply Preen simultaneously. Mulch too early and the Preen dissipates by when you need it (mid-Spring).
3. Shears.
@legalwritingpro @MatthewStiegler Use them naturally, or not at all, but don't use them only sparingly. If you put only 1 or 2 into a brief, they stand out too much.
All lawyers use contractions during oral argument--because it's natural speech. I aspire to natural speech in my writing, so I use contractions.
