I must confess that until recently I had never heard of Phool Dei, a spring festival that was celebrated yesterday in the villages of Uttarakhand.

Children gather fresh flowers from the hills and go from house to house placing them on doorsteps, offering a blessing for the household:

“Phool Dei, Chhamma Dei,
Deni Dwar, Bhar Bhakar…” roughly wishing the home prosperity.

In return they receive sweets.

It reminded me a little of Halloween in the U.S., where children go door to door saying “trick or treat.” But what a lovely contrast. Here the children arrive not threatening a prank, or asking first, but giving first. Flowers.

In an age when we speak so much about environmental consciousness, this graceful celebration of spring and nature deserves to be far more widely known.

Just as Holi travelled across India and the world, perhaps Phool Dei should too.

For me, the children of Uttarakhand are my #MondayMotivation

Enforce strict dress code for devotees.

Strict no to reels/tiktoks on temple premises.

Around 20 years ago I visited the village of Bhiwani in Haryana to attend the terahvi of my brother-in-law's father.

All the men from the village were sitting together in a group. I joined them.

An elderly Haryanvi man asked me where I was from. I said, Kerala. (Those days Mallu Pradesh hadn't gone woke so I didn't hide it. Today, you get weird looks all over India if you say are from Kerala.)

The elderly guy smiled and said: "I retired from the army many years ago. One of my postings was in Kerala. Very friendly people. The state is quite ahead in padhayee likhayee (education)."

I thanked him. Back then nobody knew that Kerala was just literate, not educated. In fact, Kerala Board educational standards are so abysmal that it's a joke. Kerala Board Class X = CBSE Class IV.

Anyway, at this point, a large, thuggish looking guy butted in: "What's the use of such padhayee likhayee. Ultimately, everyone there ends up as nurses."

It was a crass thing to say, especially at a funeral. Naturally, I was offended. I'm usually quite undiplomatic but because of the solemn occasion and in order to avoid hurting my hosts, I kept quiet.

Today, with the benefit of hindsight, I think the thuggish guy was right.

ये कोई नई बात नहीं है जब करोड़ों-अरबों के वारे-न्यारे हो रहे हो और सिस्टम में कीड़े पड़े हो तो.

आज ये वीडियो लोग खूब भेज रहे हैं जहां सिडनी में पीएम मोदी के स्वागत में पहाड़ी समुदाय ने उत्तराखंड के गढ़वाल-कुमाऊं क्षेत्र की संस्कृति और पंरपराओं को समेटे हुए ये परफॉर्मेंस दिया। किशन महिपाल जी की आवाज में जब 'घुघुती' गीत ऑस्ट्रेलिया में गूंजा तो मन घुघुती की तरह उड़ता हुआ हिमालय पहुंच गया। घुघुती उत्तराखंडी समाज के लोकगीतों, जीवन और साहित्य में कुछ वैसा ही है जैसे आप गौरेया को देखकर भावों की कोमलता और बचपन की यादों में पहुंच जाते हैं। 'घुघुती'... कबूतर फैमिली का ही एक पक्षी है.. और हमारी कल्पनाओं का कोमल एहसास है। दूर पहाड़ों में जहां सड़कें नहीं होती थीं... तो ससुराल में बैठी नई दुल्हन उस 'घुघुती' को देखकर गाती थी कि मेरे मायके में मां-बाबूजी और मेरे घर को संदेशा दे आओ। बच्चों के लिए लोरियां गाई गईं तो 'घुघुती-बसूती' लोरी बन आई। चैत्र-बैसाख के महीनों के गीतों की प्रतीक भी यही घुघुती ही हुआ करती थी। और उसका घरों में घूमना.. इधर-उधर पंख मारना मतलब नए भावों और गीतों का जन्म होना। ये जो गीत आप इस परफॉर्मेंस में सुन रहे हैं ये उत्तराखंड के प्रथम गांव (जो पहले अंतिम गांव) नीति-माणा के भोटिया जनजाति के लोकगीतों से निकला है.... और उत्तराखंड के दूरस्थ सौंदर्य, पावनता और निश्चलता से सराबोर है... दूर ऑस्ट्रेलिया में गूंज रहा है.. इसके लिए ऑस्ट्रेलिया में बसे पहाड़ी समाज और ऑर्गनाइज कर रहे भारतीय समाज और इसे मंच देने वाले हर व्यक्ति को नमन।
