A cast iron pan's non-stick coating is baked-on animal fat, and the pan that replaced it was made for decades with a chemical DuPont paid $671 million to settle lawsuits over.

Cast iron:

- One material, poured in a foundry
- Its non-stick layer is fat, baked hard onto the metal

The Highland Scot drove his beef south to England and kept the porridge.

Everyone knows the Scots were raised hard on oats: salt, a spurtle, a cold kitchen, and a nation of hill men built on a bowl of grey.

Samuel Johnson knew it too. His 1755 dictionary defined oats as a grain which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people. He meant it as a sneer, and it was the most accurate entry in the book.

The Highland economy ran on black cattle. Small, shaggy, hardy beasts that swam the narrow sounds between the islands and the mainland on the way to market, in a droving trade with records going back to 1359.

By 1723 somewhere between 25,000 and 30,000 head a year were changing hands at the tryst in Crieff. When the trade moved to Falkirk, the fields there could hold 150,000 cattle, sheep and horses on a market day, with 2,000 drovers sleeping in the open. Some of the cattle were shod like horses to survive the road. Rob Roy MacGregor started out as a respectable drover before he went into the cattle business from the other direction. Most of that beef kept walking: fattened in Norfolk, sold at Smithfield, salted into the daily ration of every soldier and sailor King George had fighting the French.

And the drover walking beside it lived on oatmeal, onions and whisky. When things were thin he opened a vein in one of the beasts, mixed the blood into his oatmeal and called it black pudding.

The cow paid the rent. The oats were what was left.

Then the landlords worked out that sheep paid even better than cattle and needed fewer people, and the Clearances did the rest. The families who stayed were pushed onto the coast and onto the potato, and when the blight arrived in 1846 the Highlands had a famine of their own.

Porridge was what a cattle nation ate after the cattle had been sold to pay somebody else.

Today it comes in a box with a heart on the front, sold as the secret of the hardy Scot. The hardy Scot would have swapped you the whole box for one of the cows.

1700: 4lb a head a year.

1800: 18lb.

1900: 90lb, and the working man took it in his tea 6 times a day.

Obesity in 1900: about 3%. Diabetes rare enough that a doctor could name his cases.

1911: the first tin of cottonseed oil sold as food goes on the shelf. Mazola corn oil, the same year.

1960s: soybean oil in everything with a wrapper.

2000: the seed oils are a fifth of the calories in America.

Then the sugar started counting. Every gram of it doing damage it had not managed in two centuries of trying.

1999: sugar consumption peaks and starts to fall.

2020: it is down about 15% from that peak. Obesity is up from 30% to 42% over the same years.

Sugar went down. The waistline went up. The oil never moved off the shelf.

Sugar is guilty. It is guilty of exactly what it did, which was making a body already wrecked by the oil worse. It was never the one who kicked the door in.

They arrested the accomplice, put a tax on it, and left the ringleader in the fryer with a heart-healthy sticker on.

🚨 Chinese scientists just detected an unexplained 71-terahertz vibration inside mitochondria — the microscopic "powerhouses" of living cells.

The work was published by researchers at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology.

The signal, which oscillates 71 trillion times per second, was detected in living human cells and mouse tissues but vanished completely once the cellular structures were dried or disrupted.

This dependency on structural integrity led the scientific team to propose that mitochondria may utilize a quantum hybrid state, known as a polariton, created by light-matter coupling inside their highly folded inner membranes to optimize how they function.

To test this theory, the scientists stimulated human cell cultures with weak infrared light tuned to specific frequencies associated with this quantum state. The experiment yielded a stunning 10 percent jump in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the vital molecule that fuels almost every biological function in our bodies.

While the study was published as a bioRxiv preprint and is still awaiting peer review, it represents a monumental leap for quantum biology. If verified, the ability to manipulate these quantum channels could pave the way for revolutionary treatments targeting metabolic diseases, aging, and chronic genetic conditions.

EIGHTH MEMBER OF OXFORD GROOMING GANG NAMED AFTER COURT LIFTS REPORTING RESTRICTIONS

The eighth member of a grooming gang convicted of sexually exploiting vulnerable girls in Oxford was named after a judge lifted a reporting restriction.

Haji Khan, 38, of the Willows, Oxford, was found guilty of conspiracy to rape following a trial at Oxford Crown Court. He was acquitted of rape and indecent assault.

Judge Peter Ross lifted the order preventing Khan’s identity from being published.

The eight men were convicted of more than 20 offences, including rape, indecent assault and false imprisonment. Five girls were aged between 13 and 15 when the offending began.

Prosecutor Oliver Saxby QC described the exploitation as “cynical and predatory”. He told jurors the men offered vulnerable girls attention, companionship and a sense of belonging, alongside food, parties, alcohol and drugs.

The court heard the girls were subjected to sexual abuse at parties, in cars and in parks. Some were threatened or subjected to violence, and abuse sometimes took place with other men present.

The verdicts were:

• Haji Khan, 38, of the Willows, Oxford, was convicted of conspiracy to rape. He was acquitted of rape and indecent assault.

• Assad Hussain, 37, of Iffley Road, Oxford, was convicted of five counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault. He was acquitted of a further count of indecent assault.

• Kameer Iqbal, 39, of Dashwood Road, Oxford, was convicted of three counts of rape.

• Khalid Hussain, 38, of Ashhurst Way, Oxford, was convicted of rape and indecent assault. He was acquitted of a further count of rape.

• Kamran Khan, 36, of Northfield Road, Bolton, was convicted of indecent assault and false imprisonment. He was acquitted of rape.

• Moinul Islam, 41, of Wykeham Crescent, Oxford, was convicted of rape, two counts of indecent assault and supplying cannabis. He was acquitted of false imprisonment.

• Raheem Ahmed, 40, of Starwort Path, Oxford, was convicted of two counts of indecent assault and false imprisonment. He was acquitted of rape.

• Alladitta Yousaf, 48, of Bodley Road, Oxford, was convicted of indecent assault.

At the time of the verdicts, the men were due to be sentenced in June.

In 1979, two men who would later win the Nobel Prize for their work on LDL tried to turn it into artery plaque. Ordinary LDL wouldn't do it.

Michael Brown and Joseph Goldstein bathed macrophages in LDL. These are the clean-up cells that swell with fat and form the core of a plaque.

The cells took a little, then stopped. However much LDL was poured in, they had a brake.

No foam cells. No plaque.

So they chemically altered the LDL first. This time the cells gorged without stopping and swelled into foam cells, the kind found inside a diseased artery.

The body doesn't do that chemistry. So the hunt was on for what the body does do to LDL to take the brake off.

In 1989, a San Diego team answered it in the New England Journal of Medicine: oxidation.

The same year, oxidised LDL was found inside human plaques.

Normal LDL, the cells stop eating.
Oxidised LDL, they can't stop.

The fat inside an LDL particle goes rancid like the oil in your cupboard. The more seed oil you eat, the more of that fat it carries.

Your blood test counts your LDL. It never checks whether any of it has turned.

One number is lowered with a prescription for life.

The other is lowered by binning a £2 bottle.

Guess which one gets measured.

In those years when many became crypto-Christians or converted to Islam, many Greek women traversed the "path of Martyrdom." The envy of the Turks for the physical and spiritual beauty and superiority of the Greek women, their lustful disposition, and especially that of the Janissaries, who came from our race through the terrible devshirme (child levy) and thus carried a heavy hatred, was manifested barbarically against the Greek Christian ladies and young women, becoming the occasion or cause of bloody martyrdom. The Greek Orthodox Church has recorded in its ranks new martyrs, virgin-martyrs, and beautiful-martyrs throughout the duration of the Turkish occupation, who were slaughtered and tortured without betraying Greece and their faith until the last moment.

Apart from the well-known sacrifice of the Greek women from Souli at Zalongo, who preferred to fall from the cliff with their children in their arms on April 20, 1803, after a four-month siege, the Muslim Turks, having neutralized the resistance at the outposts, entered the Seltsou Monastery. Some were slaughtered or captured, while 250 women and children, in order not to fall into the hands of the Muslim barbarians, jumped into the cliff next to the Holy Monastery of Seltsou in the Valley of the Achelous. Of the approximately 1400 Greeks who arrived at the Holy Monastery in Seltso, only 65 were rescued.

The French historian Pouqueville reports:

"The phalanx [1148] of the leaders Kitsos and Notis Botsaris, whom i know, marches toward Seltso. Infidelity ali three-month unequal struggle and betrayal follows the sacrifice. The Souliotes without supplies starving besieged want exit or heroic death. 300 swordsmen uncovered sweep everything except Korakou bridge. Notis falls with 5 wounds almost all men are killed. The women fighting shout death. More than two hundred and children jump and drown in the Achelous. Devastation only 10 and Kitsos are saved" [pouqueville 1824 vol. i. pp. 207-212]

Pouqueville also refers to the wife of the chieftain Karatasos (from Naousa) who martyred "praying for her executioners and invoking the help of the Virgin," and certifies that:

"The Turks murdered the wife of Karatasos and of Zafeirakis, because they did not accept to change faith."

But many Greek Christian Women were caught and tortured by the Muslims in order to change their faith and betray the Greek race and Christianity.

For example, Maria Karatasou, daughter of a priest, had five children with Anastasios Karatasos. In the slaughter of Naousa, she was taken captive and led to Thessaloniki along with her two daughters and her two younger boys. Along with the horrific tortures they endured, the mother saw one of her sons beheaded and his head thrown demonstratively between her legs. Her other son converted to Islam and later became a pasha in Egypt under the name Karatas Pasha. Her eldest son, Giannakis Karatasos, was killed along with Zafeirakis in Naousa, and the Turks sent their heads as a gift to Ebub Lubut Pasha. Maria refused to change faith, and for this Ebub Lubut enclosed her in a sack with deadly snakes, where she martyred.

The historian Eustathios Stougiannakis writes:

"The acute venom diffused into the veins of the martyr from the bites, however, killed her in sweet lethargy, praying until the last moment for her executioners and invoking the Most High and the Virgin."

And Pouqueville describes in the darkest colors to the civilized world the dramatic scenes he saw with his own eyes there:

"Many women naked were put up to the neck in sacks with cats, snakes, and mice…"

Shocking is also the testimony of an elderly woman from Poligyros, included in the book "Les Hellenides aux Françaises" (The Greek Women to the French Women), published in 1826 in Paris. This woman had been arrested along with her daughter and imprisoned with one hundred Naousa women in Thessaloniki. They were asked to deny their faith in Christ, and since all refused, they were led to tortures and martyrdom. She herself was present at the tortures of Maria Karatasou, which she describes in the book.

We are the descendants of those mothers, of those martyrs, of those heroes, and of those Greeks.

MAJOR AFGHAN THEFT OPERATION
Amir Muhammad Khadikhel, 35, who came from Afghanistan as an asylum seeker in 2019, was jailed for 9.5 years over his role in the UK’s largest stolen phone smuggling network. Ismat Miakhel, 33, was jailed for 9 years and Mansoor Mohammed, 30, who came to the UK from India on a visa in 2019, received 6.5 years.

All three admitted conspiracy to handle stolen goods and participating in an organised crime group. Khadikhel and Miakhel also admitted conspiracy to remove stolen goods from the UK.

The network was uncovered after a victim tracked their stolen phone to a warehouse near Heathrow shortly before Christmas 2024. Police found more than 800 stolen devices packed into nine boxes, many wrapped in foil to block tracking signals, ready to be shipped to Hong Kong.

Operation Echosteep was launched, with forensic evidence eventually leading officers to Khadikhel and Miakhel. When they were arrested in Waltham Forest in September 2025, their car contained stolen phones, some wrapped in foil, and both men were wearing necklaces carrying SIM-card removal pins.

Around 2,000 more devices were recovered from linked properties. At Roshan Fruit and Nuts in Leyton, police discovered a trapdoor leading to a basement containing foil-wrapped phones and £44,665 in cash. More stolen phones were found hidden inside a microwave at another property.

Prosecutors said the group played leading roles in a sophisticated criminal network. More than 5,000 phones worth around £5.5 million were seized.

Police believe the wider network may have smuggled as many as 40,000 phones during 2024 and 2025, around 40% of all phones stolen in London during that period, before exporting them to China.

Detectives say street thieves, including children, were recruited through social media and could be paid around £500 for newer devices. One 14-year-old was stopped carrying around 20 stolen phones. Some stolen iPhones can reportedly fetch up to £5,000 in China and Hong Kong.

The Met says Operation Echosteep has led to 14 arrests, more than £250,000 in cash being seized and over 10,000 stolen phones recovered, with more than 1,000 returned to their owners.

How are the public supposed to trust the police to enforce the law when incidents like this happen?
