Robert Kennedy Jr.‘s company, Children’s Health Defense, launched an anti-vaccine campaign with Australian-Samoan anti-vaccine activist Taylor Winterstein in June 2018 in Samoa. They hosted anti-vaccine seminars, charging $200 a ticket, to discuss the purported dangers of the MMR vaccine, spreading misinformation that it causes autism. Despite scientific evidence disproving any link between the vaccine and autism, their campaign led to a significant drop in vaccination rates; only 31% of infants received the measles vaccine, a decline from 70% and 60% in previous years.

The situation was exacerbated when two boys died from complications not directly related to the MMR vaccine itself but due to a tragic error: two nurses accidentally mixed the vaccine with a liquid muscle relaxant. Following this incident, the measles vaccination program was halted, and the two nurses were charged with manslaughter, receiving five-year prison sentences.

In October 2019, Samoa was hit by a severe measles epidemic that resulted in the deaths of 82 infants. Among the first 70 fatalities, 61 were babies aged four and under, and all but seven were under 15.

Kennedy did not publicly address the incident involving the two nurses until months later. He also wrote a letter to the Samoan government urging them to investigate the MMR vaccine further.
