This morning, Charles Mwangi, Head of Programs and Research at the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance @PACJA1 , delivered remarks during the opening of the African Union Great Green Wall Initiative (GGWI) Experts and Partners Engagement meeting, held at the @_AfricanUnion Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
This high-level forum convenes a broad spectrum of stakeholders β governments, development partners, civil society, and technical experts β to accelerate the implementation of the Great Green Wall Initiative Strategy and Implementation Framework 2024β2034. The GGWI is one of Africaβs most ambitious and transformative environmental programs, aiming to restore 100 million hectares of degraded land across the Sahel, sequester 250 million tons of carbon, and create 10 million green jobs by 2030.
In his address, Charles Mwangi underscored the critical need to address the intersecting crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and desertification in a unified and seamless manner. He emphasized that as we inch closer to COP30, there is a strategic window to align the Great Green Wallβs objectives with global climate policy priorities.
He also stressed the indispensable role of local communities, stating, "While continental-scale interventions like the GGWI are vital, their sustainability and long-term impact are only assured when they are rooted in and led by the very communities they seek to benefit.β
PACJA remains committed to working with African institutions, civil society, and development partners to ensure that initiatives like the Great Green Wall not only restore ecosystems but also deliver equity, climate justice, and resilience to the frontline communities most affected by climate change.
