Newly released internal DOJ documents reveal deep revolt among senior officials over Attorney General Merrick Garland’s 2021 memo targeting dissatisfied parents at school board meetings. As Fox News reported, career prosecutors saw it as a blatant politicization that would brand the Justice Department as the “Anti-MAGA Task Force.”

Parents nationwide were exercising their rights—protesting COVID school closures that harmed children, radical race and gender curricula, and failing public education. In response, the National School Boards Association urged the Biden administration to treat some angry parents as potential “domestic terrorists.” Garland’s DOJ swiftly issued a memo on October 4, 2021, directing the FBI to investigate an alleged “spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats” against school officials.

But high-ranking DOJ voices pushed back hard. One deputy assistant attorney general wrote: “I don’t think it’s possible to state how strongly I object to this. It will completely and totally nuke our election threats efforts… It’s like they’re affirmatively trying to make this thing not work and look political.” He added it “might as well rename the damn thing the Anti-MAGA Task Force.”

The Public Integrity Section chief replied: “Exactly! Stupid, stupid, stupid.” Others warned the memo lacked federal authority, had “no limiting principle,” and would turn the DOJ and FBI into the “threat police.”

Facing backlash from GOP lawmakers, parents, and states, the NSBA issued a formal apology, admitting the letter’s inflammatory language was unjustified and regretting the lack of consultation.
Garland refused to retract the memo, instead defending it as protecting public officials from violence. Critics rightly saw it as federal intimidation aimed at silencing moms and dads defending their kids.
