After PCR, DNA mixed with dye is loaded into an agarose gel. Smaller fragments race ahead, creating distinct bands.

Just a quick look at a pus sample under the microscope.

You can spot the pink rods (Gram-negative bacilli) and purple cocci (Gram-positive) both in the same field along with pus cells.
