@teacher2teacher Field trip to US Holocaust Museum, DC: Ss express awe at the pointy thing (Washington monument) & the ripple effect through the bus: "A hotdog cart! A real hotdog cart!" & "Let's eat one!" & "There are food trucks everywhere!" Happy Ss can bear witness to the good & be silly.

Congratulations to
@jrtaylor_41 for placing 1st in the state & 3rd in the region for the VFW's Voice of Democracy audio essay contest. So proud to see this young lady express veteran appreciation and share her exceptional veteran civic service story. https://t.co/v77wpjPNQt
Jayden Ross-Williams asked her Honors English 10 peers to display their veteran appreciation projects at her work: Veterans Subs. This validates Ss work. Real-world connections are made. More to come because a community partner is made for future endeavors.
Frederick County, VA, students creatively express appreciation for veteran service both locally and abroad. Please explore our website--From Our Generation to Yours: We Appreciate Our Veterans

2022's class gift finally hangs on the wall in their alma mater. Thnx 2 @tursulabell & Angela Bean, who pushed their artistic talents 2 complete this 4 the Senior Walk. This 2nd ever senior mural is an extraordinary '22 reflection of Millbrook pride. Proud 22 Class Sponsor here!
Taking care of the social-emotional skills: The empathetic reader is emotionally impacted when reading Elie Wiesel's Holocaust memoir, Night. We had to take a break from the novel around Ch. 4 and recenter ourselves with partner yoga and poetry. Laughter ensued. ๐

"Your Words Matter: Creating a Community of Writers"
To create confident student #writers, teachers must assist students in establishing #identities not only as writers but also as important people with unique voices.

My annual 9/11 presentation included 9/11 children's literature this year: echoed message of hope & resilience. Ss shared NY parents' stories. S's family knew man in the red bandana. An attending sub shared picture of his Flight 77 friends. Muslim S appreciates sensitivity.๐๐ฝ1๐
Constellations of Social Consciousness: A worldview outdoor gallery walk to introduce the concept of social consciousness in our world literture class. Many connections made between what influences our world view & bridging the world we see to the world we want to see.
Many thanks to Mr. Lewis for the technical assistance. This truly was an inquiry-based lesson with the Ts as support to student vision. Thus, the "Special Thanks to [Ms.] Buehler and Mr. Lewis" in the closing credits.
Who benefits when America is chaotically distracted by our own human rights issues? We are still global citizens and must continue to keep our eyes abroad even while we feel threatened from within. We are a nation of multitaskers. โค๏ธ๐ง๐ฝ๐ฎ๐พ๐ค๐ฉ๐ผโ๐ซ๐จ๐ผโ๐คโ๐จ๐ป๐
Reflection: My first National Writing Project as a SVWP TC and Ss owned a persuasive inquiry-based lesson I created. This beta group set the bar so high next year's group will be intimidated. So proud to know these Ss & witness their growth and excitement through the process.
Reflection: My emphasis on real world writing overshadowed the creative writing. Shenandoah Valley Writing Project course corrected me. TCs demonstrated creative writing is necessary writing in the real world. Reconnected w/ my inner writer = priceless. I will share. Who will ๐?
Reflection: I dreaded the last day of school & was on an emotional roller coaster two weeks out--the lingering impact of COVID. I know I will see the Ss again in the fall, but the dread remained. Discussed with a colleague who teaches 12th. I can't imagine: teach one year & poof!
Reflection: Ss evolved from unnaturally quiet to earnest chatterboxes: a new growth marker. Our social-emotional health seemed almost codependent at times; Ss and T in tune with the other's mood. Informal observation: Ss trauma = empathy.
Knee jerk reflections after the students leave๐ฅThe masks came off this year. Ss eyes lingered on a Ts face. Before, a crinkle of the eyes expressed approval, now, the authentic lip turn, again, matters. My whole body language changed for COVID instruction. The changes remain.
