@JimMFelton It is vile. No-one in their right mind condones slavery. The celebrations of this man are now an anachronism: he is no longer celebrated. Should his statue have been torn down? No. It should be in a museum. History is just and unjust alike, remove part and you make it propaganda.

@Compo1981 @simon_oakden @CemeteryClub As I said, had it been petitioned in the numbers which attended the protest, it would've been done as in the US. But history is not irrefutably just, it is just and unjust alike. If we actively erase any part of it, it is not history, it is propaganda.

The right course of action would've been a petition, if people wrote in the numbers which attended protests, it would've been removed and rehoused correctly. This sets a very, very bad precedent.

2) By all means take the statue down, but it should be government which does this and in that act, thereby condemn and acknowledge the faults of the past. History should never be destroyed, nothing should be damnatio memoria. How will future generations learn and grow?

1) I'm absolutely disgusted by it in all honesty. I fully support the aims of the protests but we can't just erase history we don't like. By retaining even the worst bits, we can learn from them. There's a reason we don't burn colonial objects in museums...
