STEP 1 — Learn before you spend

Before you buy a single snail —
Talk to someone already doing it.
Watch YouTube videos on snail farming in Nigeria.

Visit a snail farm if you can find one nearby.

Knowledge is the cheapest investment you will ever make.

STEP 2 — Choose your snail species

In Nigeria the best species for farming is the
Giant African Land Snail — Archachatina Marginata.

Why?

• Grows the largest
• Highest market value
• Survives Nigerian weather perfectly
• Reaches market size fastest

Don't start with any other species.

STEP 3 — Set up your pen

You don't need much space to start.

A small pen of 3×4 metres can hold 100 snails comfortably.

Your pen options:

→ Wooden box pen
→ Old car tyre stack
→ Concrete block pen
→ Greenhouse pen with net cover

Always cover the top — snails escape at night.

STEP 4 — Prepare the soil

Snails live in the soil — not just on top of it.

Use loose, non-waterlogged soil.
Mix with calcium-rich materials like crushed eggshells or limestone.

Why calcium?

Because snails need it to build strong shells.
Strong shells = healthy snails = better market price.

STEP 5 — Buy your first snails

Start with 100 snails as a beginner.

Buy from a trusted snail farmer — not a market woman.

Look for active, healthy snails with uncracked shells.

Cost of 100 quality snails:
Approximately ₦15,000 — ₦25,000 depending on size and location.

STEP 6 — Feed them properly

The good news — snails eat almost everything.

Best foods:
→ Pawpaw leaves and fruit
→ Banana and plantain peels
→ Cabbage and lettuce
→ Watermelon rinds
→ Sweet potato leaves
→ Crushed eggshells for calcium
Feed them in the evening — snails are most active at night.

STEP 7 — Maintain moisture

Snails hate two things:

Direct hot sun. And dry soil.
Spray clean water lightly on the soil every evening.

Not flooding — just enough moisture to keep the environment cool and comfortable.
Dry environment = slow growth = lower profit.

STEP 8 — Protect them from predators

Your biggest enemies in snail farming:

→ Soldier ants — they attack in groups and kill everything
→ Lizards and frogs
→ Snakes
→ Rats

Use fine mesh netting around and over your pen.
Check for ant trails every morning.
One ant attack can wipe out your entire stock overnight

STEP 9 — Monitor growth and breeding

Snails reach market size in 8 — 12 months.
During this period:

• Remove dead snails immediately
• Separate juveniles from adults
• Keep records of your stock numbers
• Watch for eggs in the soil and protect them

One healthy female can produce 200 — 300 eggs per year.
That is your profit multiplying itself.

STEP 10 — Harvest and sell

Harvest when snails reach 200 — 250 grams per snail.
Your buyers are everywhere:
→ Restaurants and hotels
→ Pepper soup joints
→ Supermarkets
→ Open markets
→ Export agents who ship to Europe

Don't wait for buyers to find you.
Take samples. Show up. Negotiate directly
