I'm starting to get the sense that "character education" is becoming co-opted by the left
All of the soft, fuzzy, SEL, just talk about it bullshit, excuses, excuses, excsuses
Kids need tough love to develop character. Boundaries. Challenging work.
For a student, I have got to imagine that learning about knights, dinosaurs, wars, castles, kings, depositions, battle, intrigue, stars, cells, animals, forests, actual academic content has GOT to be more interesting than another solipsistic identity reflection or SEL lesson
Two things improve teacher quality:
1) Experience
2) Academic content knowledge
Everything else is a university or consultant trying to take your money with false promises
“How can we get teachers to stay?!”
Admin, do your job, grow a spine, and back teachers up. Quit wilting under the littlest of pressure.
It’s really that simple
Annoying Things Admins Say…
“Remember your why’
‘Do it for the kids’
‘Try building relationships’
‘’Remember to practice self-care’
‘The Hattie data says…’
‘‘Don’t forget about differentiating’
‘We will have a new curriculum that will address all of our needs’
WHY ARE TEACHERS LEAVING THE PROFESSION?
1. Inadequate preparation for new teachers
2. Lack of support
3. Class sizes
4. Low salaries
5. Lunch & prep times are too short
6. Better opportunities elsewhere
7. Student behaviors with inadequate consequences
MUST DO BETTER! #EdChat
The longer I do this education thing, the more I come to understand that sometimes the best thing you can do for astudent is NOT help them.
Let them struggle a bit, solve their own problems, and so develop independence and self-confidence
