Public service doesn’t stop at city, county, or state lines.
We want to recognize Eric Elder, a former @KearneyPolice officer who now serves with the Wrightsville Beach Police Department in North Carolina, for his role in helping save the life of UNCW Women’s Basketball Coach Nicole Woods after a rip current incident at Wrightsville Beach.
Different uniform. Different state. Same mission — helping people when they need it most.
Eric, outstanding work. We’re proud to see someone with local law enforcement roots continuing to make a difference.

April 2026 Statistics Report – Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office
The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office is committed to transparency and keeping our community informed.
Together, we make a difference.
This National Police Week, the @KearneyPolice and Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office pause to remember the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.
Behind every badge is a family that serves too — families who have endured missed holidays, late-night calls, uncertainty, and, for some, unimaginable loss. Their sacrifice is part of this profession, and it should never be forgotten.
Last Thursday, members of our agencies, fellow first responders, and community members gathered at the Law Enforcement Center to honor those fallen officers and reflect on the legacy they left behind.
We remember them not only for how they died, but for how they lived — serving their communities with courage, compassion, and commitment.
To the families who continue carrying that loss while supporting those still serving today: thank you. We could not do this job without you.
During National Police Week, and every week, we remember.
One of our deputies had the opportunity to be involved in the judging of American 250 Essay Competition here in Buffalo County.
There were a lot of strong entries from students across the county, and it’s clear we’ve got some thoughtful young people in our communities.
One essay stuck with us—not because of where it placed, but because of the message behind it.
With permission from the student, we wanted to share it.
Sometimes it’s worth slowing down and hearing how the next generation sees things.
Congrats to Fleet Mechanic Brian Schippert on his 1-year anniversary! Thanks for keeping our vehicles running strong and on the road. We appreciate all you do—here’s to many more years with us!
NEWS RELEASE
The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office has announced the promotion of Paul Koerner to the rank of Captain. Koerner will work closely alongside Captain Robert Anderson to help ensure a smooth and seamless transition leading up to Captain Anderson’s upcoming retirement.
“Captain Koerner has consistently demonstrated dedication, professionalism, and humility throughout his nearly 32 years of service—qualities essential for this leadership role,” said Chief Deputy Daniel J. Schleusener. “He will have the opportunity to learn from Captain Anderson’s 47 years of experience and service. We thank Captain Anderson for his continued commitment to both the Office and the community.”
Koerner is a 32-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office. Most recently, he served as the inaugural Investigative Sergeant, overseeing criminal investigations and the School Resource Officer program. His current and previous roles include road patrol deputy, ESU team member and leader, Joint Terrorism Task Force member, and the rural law enforcement representative for the Nebraska Domestic Abuse Death Review Team.
He is a graduate of University of Nebraska–Kearney, the International Association of Chiefs of Police Leadership in Police Organizations program, and the FBI Regional Command College.
This promotion marks a continuation of leadership within the Office, building on the legacy of Sheriff Neil Miller and Captain Robert Anderson while preparing the next generation of law enforcement leaders.
Congratulations, to Captain Koerner, his wife, Anna, and his entire family.
Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest impact.
