6 June 1968. At 1:44 AM Robert F. Kennedy (aged 42) died in a LA hospital of gun shot wounds. He had extensive neurosurgery to remove a bullet from his brain but he could not be saved. His death came nearly 26 hours after the shooting. Sirhan Sirhan was convicted of the murder.

#OnThisDay in 1968: Robert F. Kennedy died after being shot in Los Angeles.

Kennedy had just won the California Democratic primary and was running for President of the United States when he was shot at the Ambassador Hotel.

He died in the early hours of 6 June.

His killing came only months after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, in a year already marked by war, protest, racial division and political violence.

To supporters, RFK represented a different path for America: civil rights, anti-poverty politics, opposition to the Vietnam War and a belief that politics could still speak to people left behind.

His death became one of the great “what ifs” of modern American history.
