In Morocco, You Can Leave Islam, but Islam Won’t Leave You

Let me tell you what happens when you’re born a Christian in one of the supposedly most “moderate” Muslim countries in the world: Morocco.

A Moroccan girl was born into a family whose parents converted to Christianity in the 1970s.

Her father was thrown into prison for SIX MONTHS simply because he became a Christian. There wasn’t even a law explicitly criminalizing conversion. But that didn’t stop the authorities from imprisoning him for his faith.

His daughter grew up in a Christian home. She read the Bible every day. Her family secretly turned their house into a church, where Christians gathered behind closed doors to worship.

She was Christian from childhood. Her parents were Christians. Her father had even gone to prison for refusing to abandon Christianity.

Years later, she fell in love with an American Christian man. They wanted to get married in Morocco.

And that’s when the absurdity of Islamic law slapped them in the face.

Moroccan law considered her a MUSLIM!

Not because she believed in Islam. Not because she practiced Islam. Not because she had ever chosen Islam.

Simply because the state decided she was Muslim, whether she liked it or not.

And because a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man under Moroccan law, her American Christian fiancé would have to CONVERT TO ISLAM to marry her!

Read that again.

Her father was imprisoned for becoming a Christian, but his daughter was legally treated as a Muslim and forbidden from marrying a Christian!

Apparently, in Morocco, you can be punished for becoming a Christian, but you cannot escape being classified as a Muslim.

She had to leave her own country and marry in the United States. Her Christian marriage is not recognized in Morocco.

Today, her children are Christians too. But if they claim their Moroccan citizenship, the state will classify them as Muslims, regardless of their actual faith.

Three generations of Christians.

One imprisoned for his faith.

One denied the right to marry according to her faith.

And another generation whose religious identity the state refuses to recognize.

Now, here’s what makes this story personal:

THAT GIRL IS MY SISTER-IN-LAW.

This isn’t something I read in a report. This isn’t a hypothetical example. This is my own family.

And this is happening in Morocco, the country constantly praised as one of the most moderate and tolerant Muslim countries.

What kind of religious freedom allows you to leave Islam in your heart but refuses to let you leave it in the eyes of the law?

What kind of tolerance forces a Christian man to pretend to become Muslim just to marry a Christian woman?

What kind of moderation treats three generations of Christians as Muslims against their will?

If this is what Islamic moderation looks like, imagine what Islamic “extremism” looks like.

Welcome to Morocco, where the state claims the right to decide your religion for you.

You can leave Islam. But Islam, backed by the state, refuses to let you go.

Roman concrete could repair its own cracks.

Some Roman buildings have stood for 2,000 years, while modern concrete can start to crumble within decades. For a long time, scientists did not fully understand why.

The Romans made their concrete from lime, water and volcanic ash from the area around Pozzuoli, near Naples. The ash reacted with the lime and created a material that grew stronger over time instead of weaker.

In 2023, a team from MIT led by Admir Masic found another piece of the puzzle, small white lumps of lime scattered through the concrete.

Scientists had always thought these lumps were a sign of careless mixing. In fact, they were the repair kit. When a crack forms and rainwater gets in, the lime dissolves and refills the crack with new mineral, sealing it from the inside.

The secret was “hot mixing.” Instead of using slaked lime, the Romans added quicklime directly to the mix. It heated up as it reacted with water and left these lumps behind on purpose.

To test the idea, the team cracked samples of concrete made with the Roman method and let water run through them. Within two weeks, the cracks had sealed completely. In concrete made without the lime lumps, the water kept flowing.

Roman harbour concrete went even further. Pliny the Elder wrote that once it touched the waves, it became a single block of stone that grew stronger every day. In 2017, geologist Marie Jackson showed he was right, seawater slowly grows rare crystals inside the concrete that hold it together.

An 18 year old widow with a baby had to kill the man breaking in after 21 minutes on 911 and no cop in sight on New Year’s Eve 2011.

Her husband died of cancer on Christmas Day. Before that night, Justin Martin showed up claiming to be a neighbor and she refused him. When he returned with Dustin Stewart, she barricaded the door, grabbed a 12-gauge, and called.

The dispatcher told her she couldn’t say she was allowed to shoot but to protect her baby. After Martin kicked his way in she killed him with one blast. Stewart fled and got charged with first degree murder. Prosecutors ruled it self defense.

When the seconds ran out, the shotgun was the only thing between her son and the knife.
