I am reading the article on Arch. Jim Archer I published in the @BUILDesignKE Magazine with a lot of nostalgia. I had a good time interviewing him at his @PlanningSSKE offices.

Jim passed away yesterday aged 86.

The owners of the Nanyuki Twin Towers had a great idea.

A vision to create a landmark that would possibly be synonymous the town. An iconic building that would etch their names in history. They also had money.

But they committed the grave mistake of not hiring an architect.

There are many buildings that are not collapsing but are still not suitable for habitation due to the health risks they pose to their occupants.

Very cold, poorly lit and ventilated houses. Found in both in low income and affluent neighbourhoods. Killing their occupants slowly.

For those who have been asking why buildings are collapsing and where things go wrong.... This short statement sums it all up.

By the time a building collapses, everything that could have been done wrong was actually done wrong.

That more than half of the ongoing construction projects in Kenya are happening without the supervision of the requisite professionals shows the extent of this problem.

The problem with Nairobi River is that most of the city where it flows is facing away from it. Making it the 'back' where solid and liquid waste is dumped.

If everyone faced the river, they would all be 'forced' to keep it clean.

It is more of a planning problem. Not dumping.

It is time the City County outlawed these ugly railings surrounding buildings like Times Towers, Reinsurance Plaza, National Bank House, KenCom, etc.

If the owners feel like the city is not safe for their buildings, they should look for land in the outskirts and build high...

A potentially good pedestrian space like Aga Khan Walk is messed up by adjacent buildings with dead ground floors completely 'burglar proofed' from pedestrians who are seen as threats by owners of these buildings.
