Have you ever wanted to know how to determine if your Poetic Edda translation has anti-Pagan pro-Christian bias? ALLOW ME TO SHOW YOU!
Here is page 1r of a replica of the Codex Regius. Page 1r contains stanza 5 of Vǫluspá. Two lines of stanza 5 are of interest.
The left rectangle encloses "ho̅", which is a blackletter representation of the Old Norse word "hon", which is equivalent to English "she" (feminine nominative singular).
This left enclosed word shows us that Sól is a she—is a woman—the personified Sun as a female entity.
(blackletter → normalized → English translation)
1) ſol þ̅ ne uısı → Sól þat né vissi ("The sun did not know that...")
2) huar ho̅ ſalı aꞇ̇ı → hvar hon sali átti ("where she had her halls.")
The right rectangle encloses "henꝺı", which is a blackletter representation of the Old Norse word "hendi", which is equivalent to English "hand".
This right enclosed word shows us that Sól has a hand—a right hand—and she's holding it up.
(blackletter → normalized → English translation)
1) Sol varp ſvɴan → Sól varp sunnan ("The sun cast from the south")
2) ſıɴı mana → sinni mána ("companion of the moon")
henꝺı ıɴı hǫgrı → hendi inni hœgri ("with the right hand" / "her right hand")
3) v̅ hım̅ ıoꝺꝩr → um himin jǫðr (or himinjódýr) ("over the rim/edge of heaven" / "around the sky's border")
ANY TRANSLATION that does not portray Sól (Or the Sun) as a WOMAN WITH A RIGHT HAND is greatly downplaying the nature worship of historical Norse paganism.
Not to say there's anything inherently wrong with that, but people need to be able to make informed purchases!
🙂
@nick_matau You are speaking as if China doesn't exist.
You are speaking as if aggression in the ME will not cause retaliation elsewhere.
Have you considered this? Let Israel finish something? Ok imagine China responds by invading Taiwan.
What then?
@kingkhieu I still don't fully understand what drives this irrationality. Even seemingly intelligent people suffer from this, as if they ARE intelligent other than this one thing.
Maybe some men really do want harder controls on birthrates, and women naturally want to resist that.
@kingkhieu Maybe because there really is an irrational anti-woman sentiment deep on the outskirts of the political right.
And I think there's a similar irrationality on the political left as well, but it's smaller on the left.
@kompromatfinder I don't think calling people racist anymore is going to work. If anything I think that calling people racist will foment more anger and uprising.
