In January 2026, my girlfriend and I ushered in the new year by going fishing on Lake Kariba. While we were on the water, a storm came in very quickly. The waves became high and we had to race to shore to escape the turbulent waters.

Despite the danger, and despite being good swimmers, the one insurance we had was that we were wearing our life jackets the whole time. Wearing life jackets on waterborne vessels must become standard and mandatory to avoid unnecessary loss of life.

Earlier this morning, I had the opportunity to attend the National Heroes Day Commemorations officiated by His Excellency President E.D. Mnangagwa at the National Heroes Acre.

Today, our nation stands in solemn reverence and profound gratitude as we observe Heroes’ Day—a moment dedicated to honoring the brave men and women whose selfless sacrifices, unwavering courage, and vision paved the path toward national liberation, sovereignty, and self-determination.

The freedom and peace enjoyed today were forged through the dedication of heroes who envisioned a prosperous, self-reliant nation. Their legacy serves not merely as a chapter in our history, but as an enduring beacon that guides our continuous pursuit of economic empowerment, infrastructural advancement, and sustainable development.

As we honor the heroes of our past, we are reminded that heroism in the modern era takes on a renewed mandate. Today’s call to service requires us to build upon that foundation through economic transformation, industrialization, strategic investment, and nation-building. Every modern enterprise, infrastructure project, and empowerment initiative serves as a living tribute to those who sacrificed for the promise of a better tomorrow.

President Mnangagwa Leads Nation in Remembering Cde Joseph Msika.

His Excellency President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has led the nation in commemorating the 17th anniversary of the passing of former Vice President and liberation stalwart, Cde Joseph Wilfred Msika, paying tribute to a leader whose life was dedicated to the struggle for freedom, justice, and national development.

In his message, President Mnangagwa described Cde Msika as a steadfast veteran nationalist whose sacrifices during the liberation struggle and unwavering support for the Land Reform Programme left an enduring mark on Zimbabwe's history. He said Cde Msika's life was defined by an unreserved commitment to social justice and the empowerment of the black majority.

As Zimbabwe enters Heroes Month and continues its march towards Vision 2030, the President called on all Zimbabweans to uphold the values that Cde Msika championed—sacrifice, patriotism, unity, peace, and tolerance.

When I say a “truly Zimbabwean company,” I’m not talking about ownership or nationality alone. I’m talking about a company that sees Zimbabwe’s development as part of its mission.

A business can expand across Africa and the world—that’s a good thing. But before celebrating international growth, it should also be creating jobs for Zimbabweans, developing local skills, supporting local suppliers, and contributing meaningfully to the country’s economy. Those two goals are not mutually exclusive.

That’s the point I was making.

While this is beautiful to see and genuinely touching, I can’t help but wonder what an even greater impact could look like.

Imagine if some of that generosity was also directed towards national development. For example, funding the rehabilitation of a single major road. It doesn’t have to be the whole country—every great project starts somewhere.

A team of young Zimbabweans could be employed to carry out the work under qualified supervision. If Mr Chivhayo is too busy to oversee it personally, he could simply appoint a competent project manager.

Such an initiative would not only improve infrastructure but also create jobs, provide young people with practical experience in development projects, and leave a lasting legacy that every Zimbabwean can see and benefit from.

Acts of generosity towards individuals are commendable, but investments in public infrastructure have the power to uplift entire communities. If done in partnership with the Government and ZANU PF, such projects would visibly demonstrate what collaboration between private wealth and national leadership can achieve for Zimbabwe.
