Paper: MCP Error Messages Written for Developers Hurt the Most Capable Agents Most (Xu & Wu)

An agent’s login has expired. The tool fails. The error says: “Please run: reddit-mcp-buddy --auth.”

That means: open a terminal and run a login command. The agent has no terminal. It can only call the tools the server already listed. It tries to follow the line anyway, then gives up.

On GPT-6 Astra that path recovered 6%; with the terminal command removed, 75%. Same login-expired failure. Same tools. A 69 point drop.

Stronger models follow tool-output instructions more reliably. Here the instruction is written for a developer sitting at a keyboard, not for an agent that can only call tools.

What I still want measured is how often live servers ship the “call this tool” form versus the “run this in a terminal” form after this paper lands.

If you ship these errors: name a tool the agent can call, or strip the unreachable step before the model sees it.
