הטייס ההודי הגיבור, קפטן סמית' מאצ'האר, סיפר כי למרות שנדקר ונפצע קשה הצליח לפתוח את דלת הקוקפיט מבפנים ולצעוק לעזרה.

בשיחתו עם ראש ממשלת הודו מודי הוא תיאר את הרגעים של התקיפה בתא הטייס. "באותו רגע נאבקתי על חיי. זה היה רגע שבו הבנתי שאם לא אפעל... כי כבר הייתי פצוע, היו לי פצעים רבים... הייתי חייב לעשות משהו."

מאצ'האר המשיך ותיאר את הרגעים הקריטיים: "אמרתי לעצמי באותו רגע: אם אני לא אקום... בזמן ששכבתי על הרצפה יכולתי להרגיש שהמטוס צולל... הדלת הייתה ממש שם. למרות שקיבלתי מכות, הצלחתי לפתוח אותה."

מאצ'האר הדגיש כי לא פעל לבד במניעת האסון. "כולם לקחו חלק שווה בזה. מה שעשיתי היה כדי להציל את חיי, אבל באותו הזמן ידעתי שאני לא יכול לתת לכל השאר למות".

מאצ'האר הוסיף כי הוא בטוח בהחלמתו המלאה. "אני לא מסתכל על הפציעות האלה רק בתור פציעות, כי זה יגרום לשיקום שלי להיות קשה יותר. אני רואה את זה כמסע שעובר לאט, צעד אחר צעד, וייקח זמן. אבל אני בטוח שזה יוביל להשתקמות המלאה שלי ואני אגיע לבריאות מלאה בקרוב."
