@hispanicnomad This is not progress. You show the same enthousiasm as many Americans in El Salvador, who think that skyscrapers mean better life. One should not cheer to a system that turns Paraguayans into fat mindless consumers.

We saw the city of Stalingrad for the first time today, across the river.
We came over a low rise in the late afternoon and there it was — or rather there it had been, because what sits on the far bank is no longer easily recognisable as a city in any ordinary sense. The bank rises steeply on the far side, and what was once apparently a city of wide streets, large factory buildings and apartment blocks, is now a continuous line of burning and ruin. The skyline broken into stumps and shells of buildings with fire playing through them, and above it all a canopy of smoke so dense that it dims the sun. Even across the width of the river, a kilometre at least, the sound is extraordinary — not the low rolling we have been hearing for days, but something more complex and closer, a mixture of artillery and bombs and what sounds like the tearing of very large pieces of metal.
None of us spoke for a little while. Even Korolev.
The Volga itself is wide and grey and rolls past steadily. On our bank there is activity everywhere — engineers, signals units, supply columns moving parallel to the river, and here and there the dark shapes of boats and rafts tied up at makeshift landing stages. The boats that will carry us, when the time comes. We are camped tonight on the east bank in a shallow depression above the flood plain. The fires on the far bank are bright enough to read by, though I have nothing to read and could not concentrate on it if I did.
@mrwtffacts A similar case happened in Amsterdam 17 Jan. 2005. A 43 year old Surinamese vs. a 19 year old Moroccan thief on a scooter. She pursued him by car and ran him into a tree. She received 180 hours of community service and a conditional disqualification from driving for 6 months.
@lexhoogduin@drG_J_Mulder https://t.co/PGuFWGbOS8 In the 1985 medieval film Flesh + Blood, the noble character Arnolfini says the line "Fighting is for fools" to his son Steven. He says this during a castle siege, telling Steven to stay behind with Father George instead of joining the dangerous combat.
