Scalise: "I don't think we've had a president that's been more open to the press…Joe Biden removed the press credentials from over 400 different agencies…He wants a free and fair press."

Karl: "That's not true about Biden — 400 individual reporters who had credentials did not reapply…They were not banned."

A private company making decisions about who accesses their platforms is obviously different than the White House banning outlets.

But putting that aside, the argument here is that something bad happened to Trump that I vehemently disagreed with and thought was unconstitutional therefore I am fine with Trump doing the same thing to others.

Rep. María Elvira Salazar: "It was a very good conversation. He was a gentlemen…I certainly hope he listened."

Brennan: "It doesn't sound like he agreed to take your advice."

Brennan: "Do you agree with the president's order [to ban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico]?"

Rep. María Elvira Salazar: "I think the president has a different type of style, but at the same time, I think that he is the most accessible president…So he may not be allowing some journalists to go into one place, but I'm sure that he's going to be talking to everybody at some point. That's his style. He's very accessible. Not like Biden."

Brennan: "Doesn't that violate the spirit of the First Amendment?"

Salazar: "I think that he has his own style and that he will determine who he wants to talk to."

Barrasso basically asks: "Why should the government abide by the First Amendment when private companies sometimes don't?"

Well, one reason would be because the First Amendment constrains the government and not private companies. You'd prefer for senators to know this.

Barrasso: "We all respect and value the freedom of the press, it's in the Constitution. The president, remember, in his first term, he was banned from Twitter. He was banned from Facebook…The press has an obligation to report fairly, and the president doesn't see it happening that way."

Welker: "Do you commit that if Republicans hold on to Congress, Americans will see those [$5,000] checks?"

Welker: "Would you in fact support those checks? Do you commit that they will go out out to Americans?"

Barrasso: "We will have a discussion in Congress…We'll have that discussion in the next Congress."

Trump on banning news outlets from the White House: "The ban on the free press. A very simple ban. I don't want them in my office. I don't want them here…We are banning them, yes we are. And there may be others to follow."

Trump: "It's totally allowed…As I understand it, he paid him back…A friend of his gave him a wedding party. That's very common."

Trump: "Here's the problem with the Kennedy Center…I actually like the name of Kennedy and Trump, Trump and Kennedy…The place is a dump…Why should I raise and put up and do all of this work building it, which I'll do a better job building it than anybody in America…I think the Trump administration should be recognized as having saved the Kennedy Center."

Trump: "No."

Q: "Xi is coming next week. China is one of the most repressive countries for journalists in the world. What signal does it send that you're trying to bar journalists from the White House?"

Trump: "I don't know about that. I think we're repressive also. We get fake news."
