The film is about pride. You have limited choices in life (opening lyrics: 'there is more to see than can ever been seen, more to do than can ever be done'), and so you have to experience pride and decide how you'll spend your short lifespan. You can either veer towards good (embodied by Mufasa) or evil (embodied by Scar). The third way, Hakuna Matata, will always lead to ruin since you'll be devoured by proud men of either side.

The film means you must choose or die. Simba made his choice according to his love for his bride and looking up at the stars (thinking big).
