Disconcerting surely is the lobby organisation Labour Friends of Israel putting out an official statement congratulating Andy Burnham on winning Makerfield and saying: “we look forward to working with you.’ Has Labour Friends of Israel become an official branch of the Labour Party and thus the UK Government? It would appear from this statement that this is the case.

That announcement backed up by Labour Friends of Israel MPs saying that there shouldn’t be a leadership contest - the most prominent voice in this respect being LFI’s de facto leader in Parliament - Margaret Hodge.

What is patently clear is that Labour Friends of Israel do not want, under any circumstances, someone on the left entering a leadership contest.

And then there is Burnham appointing as his chief of staff in waiting James Purnell who is a former Chair of Labour Friends of Israel.

A former director of Labour Friends of Israel - Jennifer Gerber - has told the Jewish Chronicle in an article published yesterday: “I worked with Andy for over seven years…Andy is someone who will listen and who cares, so the challenge for the community is to help him and others in government fully understand how the events in the Middle East and the language politicians use to talk about them, impact our small community here in the UK.”

It’s clear that Labour Friends of Israel do not want a formal leadership contest, do not want the democratic process to run its course, and want Burnham installed as Prime Minister as soon as possible.

And does it all lead back to Labour Friends of Israel’s Josh Simons standing down for Burnham in Makerfield?
