Golo Koe Festival — Flores, Indonesia 🇮🇩
Every 10th August
On the island of Flores, Indonesia, 10 August marks the beginning of the peak celebrations of the Golo Koe “Maria Assumpta Nusantara” Festival, a remarkable meeting point between faith, local culture and community life.

The festival's spiritual heart is a Marian pilgrimage, in which the statue of Our Lady of the Assumption travels through communities before reaching Labuan Bajo. The journey brings parishes together and turns the religious celebration into a shared cultural experience.

But Golo Koe is much more than a religious gathering.

Traditional Manggarai culture takes centre stage. The programme includes traditional dances, music, cultural performances and the famous Caci, a traditional Manggarai whip-and-shield performance. The festival also brings together people from different ethnic and religious communities, making cultural exchange part of the celebration.

10 August opens the cultural programme with creative-economy and culinary exhibitions alongside an archipelago-wide arts and culture performance. Local communities, schools, institutions and small businesses participate, allowing traditional creativity and local products to become part of the celebration.

The festival also connects culture with care for nature. Environmental education, tree planting, coral-reef restoration awareness, mangrove activities and beach clean-ups form part of the wider programme. The idea is striking: celebrating the community also means protecting the environment that sustains it.

Kenya is suffering from two main problems, which are Democracy and the Economy. These are the issues that have put Ruto at odds with the people. Unfortunately, Ruto doesn't have any solutions for these two issues.

Ruto says that the Opposition has no agenda. The opposition's number one agenda is the restoration of democracy in this country. Nobody in the regime can decode this because they have normalised impunity and lawlessness.

Vision 2030 has three pillars. These are economic, political and social. The target of the political pillar is to "realise a democratic system that is issue-based, people-centered, result-oriented, and accountable." This was to be realised through upholding the rule of law, protecting individual rights and freedoms, and fostering transparency across public institutions.

This regime has done everything possible to undermine our democracy. Rampant abuse of human rights and disregard for the rule of law have become the norm.

Many people miss the link between politics and economics. Economies are run by politicians. Bad politics can't achieve good economic outcomes.

Even the famed Asian tigers that grew their economies rapidly under dictatorship had to revert to democracy in order to sustain these gains.

Many of the economic problems we are facing have their root in failure to adhere to the goals of the political pillar in Vision 2030. If we strictly adhered to the Constitution and the Public Finance Management Act, we wouldn't be having the debt problem we are in.

No sane investor will invest in a country where the law is not being respected. The current political environment in Kenya doesn't promote investment.

The economy won't function the way we want until we address the governance issues. No economic solutions will deliver progress without a functional democracy. The rule of law must reign supreme. Building an economy on a weak democratic foundation is building on sinking sand.
