When the first Vans store opened in Anaheim, California, in 1966, founder Paul Van Doren didn’t have enough change for the day’s first customers. Instead, he trusted 12 buyers to take their shoes home and return the following day to pay. Every one of them came back and paid in full.

The Van Doren Rubber Company opened its first location in Anaheim, California, on March 16, 1966, with an unusual approach: the company made its canvas shoes on-site and sold them directly to customers. On opening morning, 12 people entered the store and chose the shoe that would later become known as the Vans Authentic.

The store had no cash available to provide change, so Paul Van Doren trusted the customers to take their shoes home without paying. He asked them to return the next day with the money, and all 12 customers reportedly came back and paid for their shoes in full.

'Jesus, Help Us' - Todd Beamer’s Last Prayer on Flight 93

On 9/11, Todd Beamer led the assault on Flight 93.

He reached an operator on the ground, Lisa Jefferson. Soft-spoken. Calm. He told her three men had taken the plane. He told her his name. He told her he was from New Jersey. He told her he had two boys, David and Andrew, and a wife expecting their third child.

He said, “Oh, Jesus, help us.”

Then he asked her to pray.

They recited the Lord’s Prayer together, start to finish.

"Our Father which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.
Amen."

When they finished he said, “Jesus, help me.”

He made her promise: if he did not make it, tell his wife and sons he loved them.

Jefferson later said she knew in that moment that he knew. There was not much left for him to do. So he prayed. Then he went out on faith.

He turned to the men with him.

“Are you ready? Okay. Let’s roll.”

They rose. The plane never reached Washington.
Jefferson kept her promise.

She called Lisa Beamer and told her everything her husband had asked her to say.

❌ Remember - Hollywood cut Jesus from the Flight 93 film. That was not an accident. It was the same war the left has waged for decades - erase God from the story, then wonder why a nation forgets who saved it.

That is a Christian at the end of the world: the prayer Jesus taught, the name of Jesus, love for his family, then the fight.

His widow, Lisa Beamer, in her 2002 book Let’s Roll!: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage, said....

What made Todd different from many other men who are merely religious was not the fact that he was willing to die for his faith; the terrorists did that.

No, Todd was willing to live for his faith. Todd built his life on a firm foundation so that when the storm came on September 11, he didn’t have to check the blueprints to see if everything he had built his life on was going to stand. He knew.

On September 9, 2001, one of the most significant events in modern military history occurred just 48 hours prior to the attacks of 9/11 when legendary Afghan guerrilla leader Ahmad Shah Massoud was assassinated by two al-Qaeda operatives posing as journalists. While they set up a camera to record an interview, they detonated explosives in its battery pack, killing one of the most brilliant military leaders in history.

Praised by the Wall Street Journal in 1992 as, “The Afghan Who Won the Cold War,” the “Lion of Panjshir” was the most effective mujahideen commander in the fight against the Soviets. He famously noted, “there are only two things the Afghan must have, the Quran and the Stingers.”

Following the defeat of the Soviets he was appointed the Minister of Defense in the new Islamic State of Afghanistan before once again taking up arms to oppose the Taliban.

In April 2001 he spoke to the European Parliament in France, warning of an al-Qaeda plot to attack the United States that would make the destruction of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania pale by comparison.

Massoud led the United Islamic Front for the Salvation of Afghanistan (Northern Alliance), the force that would take Kabul and oust the Taliban from power in the name of their martyred commander alongside U.S. military and intelligence personnel just months after his death.

I often wonder what Afghanistan would look like had Massoud taken his place as a leader in a post 9/11 world. Would we have left in defeat? Would the Taliban be in power today? We will never know.

I spent 30 years in academia. Here are my observations about my students. Toward the end, I was teaching “Gen Z." These students combined ignorance with strident moral certainty. They seemed to have had no general education at all, and lacked the most basic knowledge of history, even recent history. They were immature and emotionally fragile.
Many could not handle criticism, no matter how sugar coated. It took very little to reduce them to tears – or to send them into a fit of narcissistic rage. They were shockingly bereft of intellectual curiosity, and many gave the impression of having no internal life at all.
I'll share more observations later.
