It was a special privilege for my wife Kristen and me to be in Burley, Idaho today as I officiated in the dedication of the Burley Idaho Temple.

We are living in a glorious season of temple building. This temple is our 212th dedicated temple worldwide. More than 150 other temples are in design or under construction.

Temples are essential to our Heavenly Father’s plan for His children. In these houses of the Lord, we are taught the most important things we can learn and do in mortality.

The scriptures speak of perilous times, when men’s hearts will fail them. They also speak of worthy disciples escaping these things, of their standing in holy places, and not being moved. Surely the times ahead will call for us to remember our temple covenants and to rely on the blessings promised to us.

I rejoice with you in the dedication of this Burley Temple.

The temple is the House of the Lord, a House built for the sacred work of the Lord God of Israel, our Savior and our Redeemer, to prepare us for exaltation in the celestial kingdom of God.

As we begin this new year, the Spirit can help us recognize the gifts and talents God has given us.

Let us, like the faithful servants in the Lord’s parable, increase and magnify them.

The day will come when we stand before our compassionate Father in Heaven to give an account of our stewardship. He will want to know what we did with the gifts He gave us—in particular, how we used them to bless His children. God knows who we truly are, who we are designed to become, and so His expectations for us are high.

But He doesn’t expect us to take some grand, heroic, or superhuman leap to get there. In the world He created, growth happens gradually and patiently—but also consistently and unrelentingly.

Remember, it is Jesus Christ who already did the superhuman part when He conquered death and sin.

Our part is to follow the Christ. It is our part to turn away from sin, turn toward the Savior, and walk in His way, one step at a time.

As we do this, diligently and faithfully, we eventually cast off the shackles of imperfections and faults and slowly become refined, until that perfect day when we will be perfected in Christ.

The blessings are within reach. The promises are in place. The door is wide open. It is our choice to enter and begin.

The beginning may be small. But that is OK.

Where faith is weak, begin with a hope in Christ Jesus and in His power to cleanse and purify.

Thousands of missionaries at the Provo MTC had a unique experience… thanks to an unexpected circumstance.

Right in the middle of a devotional with Elder @AndersenNeilL of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the sound system stopped working.

The auditorium… which doubles as a gymnasium… went quiet.

The disappointment was palpable…. But it was quickly replaced with joy.

Elder Andersen invited the MTC choir to sing their opening song again, “We’ll Bring the World His Truth.”

After the first verse, he stood and directed the whole congregation to join in.

Without hesitation, missionaries rose and boldly sang the words “we are now the Lord’s missionaries.”

One sister said she felt as if surrounded by angels.

After the singing, a quiet reverence filled the room.

Elder Andersen continued his message, testifying of Jesus Christ, without the help of the microphone.

Many missionaries in the very back of the room said they prayed to hear his words and their prayers were answered.

One elder said God was telling every single person in that room that He loves them and cares about them.
