The Victoria and Albert Museum's V&A East site has officially opened today in Stratford, East London. Designed by O'Donnell and Tuomey, the 6,400-square-metre new building is part of the wider £1.1BN East Bank cultural quarter.
The museum's exterior has been inspired by the work of Cristóbal Balenciaga, an influential Spanish couturier who was celebrated in a major V&A exhibition in 2017.
Explaining its design, O'Donnell and Tuomey stated: "As with Balenciaga’s creations, the outer skin of the new V&A building acts as a three-dimensional ‘folded dress’, lending the museum a distinctive form and striking identity. V&A East has been designed as a statement structure with a distinctive facade that wraps the building. The angular outer skin appears different from various approaches and view points."
Together, the museum and its sister project, the V&A Storehouse on the Olympic Park, form part of the V&A's broader East London expansion project.
