Kayla (Banzet) Katzer chose Butler because of the journalism program and a magazine scholarship that helped make her education possible. As a member of the Grizzly magazine team and its editor, she developed the writing, communication and leadership skills that would shape her career.⁣⁣
⁣
Faculty members John Jenkinson and Mike Swan also played an important role, supporting Katzer’s writing and goals as she found her voice and gained confidence.⁣⁣
⁣
After Butler, Katzer transferred to the University of Kansas, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism. Today, she is a market manager for Crossland Construction and has spent the past 10 years working in communications and marketing.⁣⁣
⁣
“Butler gave me a strong foundation in writing, storytelling, and communication that I continue to use every day.”⁣⁣
⁣
She also sees Butler as more than the start of her career — it was a place where she built lasting friendships and found people who invested in her future.⁣⁣

About last weekend… 👀💜

The Grizzlies celebrated 100 years of Butler with some pretty cool new white helmets and a 24-14 win over Dodge City! 🏈🐻

We made a day of it with food trucks, local vendors, family-friendly activities and plenty of Grizzly spirit.

Thanks to everyone who came out and celebrated with us! 💜

Weston Pletcher came to Butler with a goal of pursuing a career in sports broadcasting. Mentors Mike Swan and Lance Hayes made a lasting impact during his time at Butler as he began building the skills and experience that would shape his career.⁣⁣
⁣
After graduating from Butler, Pletcher transferred to KU to continue pursuing sports broadcasting. Near the end of his time there, he discovered a new path in college athletics public relations — a career he has now spent 12 years pursuing at Wichita State University.⁣⁣
⁣
Looking back, Pletcher knows where that journey began.⁣⁣
“I wouldn’t be where I am today without Butler.”⁣⁣
⁣
And when it comes to being a Butler alum? His answer is simple:⁣⁣
“Pride! I won’t trade being a Grizzly for anything.”⁣

One of the coolest parts of being a vocal music student at Butler is getting to learn from people who are out there doing what you hope to do someday! 🎶✨

Rayna J, who has toured with Broadway’s The Book of Mormon and performed in Hairspray with Music Theatre Wichita, spent time with our students earlier this semester to share her experiences and give them a glimpse of what’s possible in the world of music theatre.

Experiences like these help our students make connections, find inspiration and see where their own talents could take them!

100 years of Butler. 💜

Today’s Institutional Develepment Day was all about celebrating our Centennial with our Butler faculty and staff. We had some fun with the theme, took a trip through the decades and spent the morning celebrating the people who make Butler what it is.

100 years down. Here’s to what’s next! 🐻

Gerald Haines came to Butler after an employer gave him a choice: go to school and keep his job, or find work elsewhere. That decision helped set him on a path toward a career in education.⁣⁣
⁣
One of Haines’ most memorable experiences at Butler came in American History with Ed Walborn, who brought Teddy Roosevelt’s famous call to “Charge” to life by stepping onto a desk and leaping forward.⁣⁣
⁣
Haines went on to spend 41 years teaching, along with additional classes throughout his career. Today, he manages rentals and cares for his home, reflecting on the hard work and dedication that shaped his life.⁣⁣
⁣
“Forty-one years of teaching and additional classes brought me to understand and appreciate working hard to achieve accomplishments.”⁣⁣

How cool is it that our culinary students get opportunities like this? 👀🍽️

Six students from the Redler Institute of Culinary Arts recently got to serve as judges for a Chopped-style cooking competition featuring chefs from Legend Senior Living, putting their culinary knowledge to work as they evaluated cooking skills, plate presentation, use of the secret ingredient and taste.

They handled the whole experience like pros, and even better, got a firsthand look at another career path they could pursue in the culinary industry. Experiences like this are such a valuable part of learning beyond the classroom. 👩🏼‍🍳

Jessica Turner was drawn to Butler’s highly respected nursing program and the opportunity to earn an affordable, high-quality education close to home. Nursing instructor Janice Jones also left a lasting impact, teaching Turner that nursing is about more than patient care — it’s about professionalism, growth and sharing knowledge with others.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Today, Turner serves as Chief Nursing Officer at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital while pursuing her Doctorate of Education. Butler gave her the foundation for her nursing career and helped shape the leader she is today.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Now, Turner gives back by returning to Butler to speak with future nurses and invest in the next generation of healthcare professionals. 💜⁣⁣
