Teachers’ unions are supposed to fight for teachers.

Instead, too often, union leadership has become a political machine obsessed with money, power, and influence while our children continue to fall behind.

In California, more than half of our students are not proficient in basic reading and math. When a system produces those results year after year, that isn’t success. It’s a failure of leadership.

I know what this looks like firsthand.

Our board was sued over our parent notification policy. We’ve been harassed and investigated for removing sexually explicit material from the hands of children. We’ve been sued and harassed over a flag policy designed to ensure classrooms remain focused on learning.

And through it all, our board has lived within its means and continued giving our teachers and staff the raises they deserve.

We support our teachers. We respect our teachers. But we will not back down from a union leadership agenda that divides our communities and puts politics ahead of children.

I’ve watched union leadership go after teachers across California simply for speaking up and saying, “Enough.”

And when I stood with parents, teachers, and students and refused to back down, they came after me too.

The California teachers’ unions poured nearly $6 million into the primary to defeat me.

They didn’t succeed.

Because our children are not political currency. Their future is not a bargaining chip.

It’s time to put education back at the center of education.

It’s time for accountability. It’s time for change.
