I’m… done.
From art and the community to art commissions, I’m just done with it all.
I have been a fan of the NSFW art community for years but always was little more than an outsider looking in, excited for the day that I could finally make commissions and possibly support the artists which I enjoyed.
And when the day finally came… I somehow screwed it all up.
I’ll leave a few of my biggest mistakes below for those who want to avoid having as horrid a time.
1) I struggled to purchase any comms and, believe me, I tried. I begged, I negotiated and worst of all, I was sickeningly complimentary. I was just overly eager and became petulant and passive aggressive when denied. Basically just unlikeable in general. Don’t be like me, accept the declined commissions with grace, and definitely don’t throw money at the artists like they can be bought for the right price.
2) When I finally did receive commissions, I was so excited that I didn’t take any precautions. I’ve literally flushed thousands of dollars on commissions that I’ll never see, some of those artists were at least nice enough to apologize for ripping me off… Honestly, I don’t really care about the money but it does sting a little when you hype it up to your friends, show them the artist’s other work and excitedly explain what you’re expecting only for months to pass and… nothing. Before you hire an artist, read up on them, make sure they have a history of delivering and while you shouldn’t be abrasive, don’t ignore when they skip deadlines.
3) I was so damned awkward! I’m not normally awkward in real life but for some reason I just behaved so badly that it was embarrassing. Seriously, if you decide to chat with artists you’re a fan of then just relax and take your time in responding and most importantly, don’t constantly second guess yourself.
4) Build a presence online. I was and still am a nobody online and thanks to bots and scammers, this has forced artists to be incredibly guarded, meaning that nobody will trust you until you have at least a little online reputation. Basically, if an artist denies you in a very terse or rude manner, be aware that they’re probably just exhausted after fighting off constant attempts to rip them off. As for how to build a presence, I don’t know.
5) Lastly, I was horrible at being creative, my imagination sucked and the NSFW commissions I requested were all just… awful, bland, etc. My main concept was especially lame, I created a single character and wanted to have them drawn in as many different styled kinks as possible. Before you dive into the world of commissioning art, plan what you want and try not to make it something dumb like I did.
Lastly, just to add a little positivity to this overall negative experience, the few artists who did engage with me were pretty polite and forgiving, probably too forgiving, and I managed to commission quite a few great pieces thanks to them. I wish I could have expressed to all of them how much that meant to me but I really doubt they want to see any kinds of messages from me.
TL;DR - Don’t be a jerk, remain attentive of purchased commissions, relax and take your time, build an online presence people can trust, and be prepared before commissioning.
Hopefully you’ll have better luck than me, all the best!
As for me, I’m probably going to give AI art a try for the time being until I’m comfortable enough to make a second attempt.
@KingSuSN64 Sorry you’ve been under so much pressure King, it sounds like you’ve had quite the year. I hope this doesn’t come across as insensitive but you mentioned that, for animation commissions, you’ll have to follow your own schedule. Does that mean you’ll still be working on those?
@StrongMoist Yup, that’s actually the key to a majority of internet drama, just don’t respond, you’re only pouring fuel on the flames. A response is actually what a lot of drama-chasers crave.
@KingSuSN64 If that cowboy-bun (cowbun?) in your banner is an example of your art, then I’m honestly shocked you haven’t garnered more weirdos and such in your replies. Consider me your first!
@haysey_draws Excuse me while I put on my lil’ tinfoil hat but I feel like it was done on purpose, to give those of us who enjoy browsing Twitter but hadn’t gone as far as picking up Blue to finally take the plunge.
