On the morning of June 26, 2015, America was caught between two realities: while people celebrated the Supreme Court's landmark ruling on marriage equality and the hard-won civil rights battle decades in the making, they also grieved for the nine lives lost in the horrifically violent and racist attack in Charleston, South Carolina, just days before.
When President Obama took the pulpit in Mother Emmanuel Church that day, eleven years ago, he called on an entire nation to examine its conscience, speaking on the idea of grace: "If we can find that grace, anything is possible. If we can tap that grace, everything can change."
At just 17 years old, Kamora Freeland made history as New York's youngest licensed Black female pilot—earning her private pilot's license before she even got her driver's license. Originally from Staten Island, she completed her solo flight at 16 and passed her pilot's test on her 17th birthday.
So much of my story—and Barack's—runs through the South Side of Chicago. We had so much fun going down memory lane with @People, sharing moments from the decades we've spent together, the opening of the Obama Presidential Center, and the work we still have left to do in our next chapter. We hope you'll check out the interview: https://t.co/N7HgrjrQRj
We're not crying, you are.🥹
Michelle Obama stepped to that podium and gave her husband every single flower he deserved. She spoke directly to Barack and brought him to tears.
This is what love and legacy look like. 🖤

Viola Fletcher, the last living witness of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, has passed away at 111. Her legacy of strength and survival will never be forgotten. 🕊️🙏🏾
Bo and Sunny had no idea they were living at the most famous address in the world. They just wanted scratches behind their ears, a patch of sun to lie in, and some wide open spaces to run. That energy is alive at the Obama Presidential Center.
Recently, @MichelleObama reflected on her family’s life in the White House. In this new video, she explains how part of the Life in the White House exhibit at the Museum featuring Bo and Sunny—-a playful comic strip called "Our Life in the White House"—was designed so every child, including those who can't see, can experience the joy those two brought to the White House.
"The fur is rendered in different textures, so a child can run their fingers across it and feel the comfort Bo and Sunny gave to us," Mrs. Obama said. "It's a reminder that home is being with the people—and pups—we love, no matter the setting."
The Obama Presidential Center opens on June 19 in Chicago's Jackson Park.
