Yesterday, I watched the FIH Pro League match between Pakistan and Belgium. Belgium 🇧🇪 defeated Pakistan🇵🇰 6–0, and once again the goalkeepers are facing criticism.
In the past, Abdullah and Muneeb were blamed, and now Ali Raza and Waqar are facing the same situation. My question is: what were the other 10 players on the field doing to protect and support their goalkeeper?
I understand that decision-making and communication can be issues, but the bigger problem is the complete lack of a structured goalkeeping development program in Pakistan. There are no specialized goalkeeper training camps, no systematic talent identification, and no long-term development pathway for goalkeepers. As a result, talented goalkeepers such as Muneeb, Abdullah, Ali Raza, Waqar, and many others have suffered due to the neglect of the goalkeeping department. Hopefully, the Pakistan Hockey Federation will recognize these shortcomings and take meaningful steps to develop and support goalkeepers in the future.

Spain 🇪🇸defeated Pakistan 🇵🇰5-1 in the FIH Pro League. The key difference was Spain’s attacking efficiency, with 24 circle penetrations compared to Pakistan’s 7. Pakistan earned 4 penalty corners but struggled to create chances from open play, while Spain scored 4 field goals. The team needs improvement in defensive structure, marking inside the circle, and attacking transitions. Hopefully, Pakistan will learn from this performance and come back stronger in the next match. 🇵🇰🏑Good

Pakistan survived three quarters against Belgium with a defensive approach, but in the fourth quarter, Belgium broke Pakistan’s defensive structure and scored four goals. The goalkeepers need to be more active and sharper against the world’s best teams, while pre-scanning remains crucial for reading situations and making better decisions. I saw a statement from our former senior, but I must say that I totally disagree with the statement of Salman Akbar. The Pakistan Hockey Federation has already given many chances to Tahir Zaman, but his track record remains the same. He always talks about professionalism but fails to deliver results. In his last assignment, he completely mishandled the situation and created an unfortunate history when players pulled out of the World Cup Qualifier under the management of Tahir Zaman.

Former Pakistan goalkeeper Salman Akbar: "Given the opportunities he has had and his coaching achievements, Khawaja Junaid is nowhere close to the ability of Tahir Zaman. This appointment was just a quick fix because management needed someone in place. In my view, if he is allowed to continue — with two legs of the Pro League still remaining — results will never improve. I’m not saying a new coach would guarantee success, but bringing back Tahir Zaman as head coach after resolving issues would be better. I believe that even after taking such big steps, if we keep making decisions like continuing with Junaid, we will only see a decline rather than growth."
