Good Thursday morning and welcome to July 16th...

On this date in 1999, a private single-engine plane piloted by 38-year-old John F. Kennedy, Jr. took off from Essex County Airport in New Jersey, destined for Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.

The plane never made it.

Initially the exact cause was uncertain, but the plane went down somewhere off the coast near Martha's Vineyard. Also perishing in the crash were Kennedy's wife Carolyn and her sister Lauren.

Nearly a year later, the National Transportation Safety Board determined the crash was likely caused by Kennedy’s “failure to maintain control of the airplane during a descent over water at night, which was a result of spatial disorientation.”

The NTSB added, “Factors in the accident were haze, and the dark night.”

While internet memesters like to tie this event with Hillary Clinton's run for the New York Senate seat, and imply sinister circumstances, Kennedy had actually not declared for the seat and had not registered as a candidate.
