Was 1066 really the birth of modern England as we know it?
As part of his guest edit, Tom Holland @holland_tom talks about a pivotal moment in English history - the unification of England in 927 as a single kingdom under King Athelstan - with historian Michael Wood.
Really delighted to be developing the Good Beer Guide bookshelf at the resurrected Mardale! Now in GBG 2025 - celebrating with 40p off a pint for all this weekend and some great local brews https://t.co/0FiCDMLT3t #goodbeerguide#CAMRA#realale
Last quarter, NW England lost 35 pubs - hardest hit region in a 51% national increase @Countrystride1 Podcast https://t.co/8HLMGjaDFS explores Pubs of Cumbria and talks to how communities in Bampton Valley & Lowick Green have fortunately saved theirs
New for a wet Sunday: Pull up a barstool for CS126 PUBS OF CUMBRIA – When communities save their pubs – with the Mardale Inn @BvcpInn and @TheFarmersArms_ as we talk community buyouts, the highs and lows of hospitality, the perfect pub... & glitter balls. https://t.co/NjVajVM2yo
@leeinthelakes Always lovely to see the @WildHaweswater crew and @leeinthelakes at their community local, The Mardale 🎉 Congratulations on the end of this era - but looking forward to what’s next - all the very best! 👍
@RogerProtzBeer Really important to highlight @RogerProtzBeer CMBC destroy legends for profit and also commit marketing fraud. 'Wainwright' brewed in Burton' is promoted to folks in Lakes as 'local'😠As a community pub saved from Marstons & Jennings we ONLY sell #cask beer brewed within 50miles
Beware ‘Wild Old Fella’ t-shirt coming up in the future perhaps Lee 😜- Happy Birthday from your friends at The Mardale - let’s get a return gig and other events lined for 2024 👍
Excited to share that The Mardale has just been listed in #CAMRA's Good Beer Beer Guide 2024! Ace testimony to our team & our local brewers @loweswatergold@HawksheadBrewer@BownessBayBrews@ganyambrew Gold + 2 changing ales & 'a conundrum' await your visit!
We bid a fond farewell to @BvcpInn, which I think is the friendliest, most delightful pub I have ever stayed in. Community run, mattresses stuffed with Herdwick wool, conveniently located for Withnail’s phone box - what’s not to like?
In ‘Premiere Week’ excited to be serving ‘Cumbrian Red’ at The Mardale - 50p a pint gets donated to @eden_reds to save our cuties in the Valley. Our ‘cast list’ include English hops @CharlesFaram pump art @sammartinart beer @loweswatergold producer @terrybnd
Enjoying @loweswatergold at the ‘Drunken Duck Inn’ at #GBBF - it’s travelled really well but has hit London pricing at £5.20 a pint - still only £4.50 at the community owned Mardale! Coming home ASAP!!
INCOMING!! 🐿️🍺 I had a lovely time at @loweswatergold brewery on Thurs. Official Brew Day for ‘Cumbrian Red’ ale tied to my next #lakedistrict film 🎥 A DONATION from every pint sold will go to #redsquirrel#conservation and it’s made with native ingredients! The ale is red in colour like the scamps and strong like their character 😊🐿️
It’ll be available far and wide soon and down the line in bottles too.
The lovely artwork is by my friend @sammartinart 🎨
Amazingly privileged for #lakedistrict#localhero@terrybnd to film at the community owned Mardale Inn - check out https://t.co/fORkxKNADk for more details on our extended Summer opening hours, new menus and refurbed bedrooms
Some video stills from a promo video I was filming today feat the excellent @BvcpInn today in the #lakedistrict A cracking community owned pub that’s thriving! 😊👍Close to Wainwright’s famous Coast to Coast walk and you even get to see red scamps outside too!🐿️ #pubs#community
As I often say to visitors, I know of not one community owned pub that’s closed down (unless they sell to build another community asset at least) within the UK.
Goes to show how such places are of huge value to rural communities like Cumbria eh and not some ‘commodity’ often owned by PubCos and then close 😉😊👍🙏🍺
