Our DVCAA Prof. @SsaliSarah has today held discussions with a delegation from the Research and Education Network for Uganda (@RENU_256) led by CEO, Nicholas Mbonimpa, aimed at broadening the existing partnership beyond internet service provision to supporting teaching, learning and research activities.
The DVCAA expressed Makerere's desire to produce graduates that are not only academically grounded but also cognizant of the needs of the job market. She lauded initiatives such as provision of academic internship opportunities and asked RENU to identify, handhold and mentor promising talents beyond fulfilment of degree requirements.
Mr. Mbonimpa appreciated the need to deepen collaboration and expressed RENU's readiness to continue improving ICT infrastructure in Makerere so as to boost teaching and support services. He highlighted the proposed Open Radio Access Network (RAN) Architecture deployment within 6 months to boost training of students in 5G and other technologies as an example. Other initiatives discussed included training staff and students on acquisition of Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) to improve visibility of their publications and research output.
The delegation later led the DVCAA on a guided tour of RENU Labs' on-campus facility, where over 80 solar-powered routers have been assembled and shipped to various African countries such as Malawi, Rwanda and South Sudan under the RENUMESH Technologies joint venture.

Today at Cambridge Africa Day 2026, held at the University of Cambridge, the Chairperson of the RENU Board, @Prof_Kitayimbwa delivered a keynote address on Africa's Research Priorities: A Forward Vision for a Young Continent.
He argued that Africa must not remain merely a field site, data source, or case study. A young continent must become an author of knowledge — setting its own questions, governing its data, building its research systems, and translating evidence into transformed lives.
“Research priorities are never neutral. They reveal what we value, what we fund, what we fear — and sometimes what we have learned to ignore.”
He also celebrated Cambridge-Africa and the UK’s long-standing contribution to African research leadership, while calling for an even bolder future of equitable, Africa-led partnership.
Cambridge Africa Day is a flagship event that brings together researchers, academics, students, policymakers, and partners from Africa and the UK to showcase collaborative research, share knowledge, and strengthen research partnerships.
