Super proud of our lab! Undergrads took home three awards from international summer research! Thanks to my graduate students for excellent mentorship! And @SysEB_Entsoc for all the hard work! #ESA2019 @carpophilus @pyractomena @nsaxton55 @BYU @BYUKennedyCtr

Winners!!! Senior personnel prevail! Thanks ESA. #ESA2019 ⁦@ZaspelLab⁩ ⁦@Dr_Akito⁩

Nice #firefly poster by @BybeeLab members. Atyphella species from Vanuatu. #Coleptera #Lampyridae #EntSoc19

[Gavin Martin Ph.D. (he/him/his) @pyractomena]

Two populations of Pyractomena out last night. It might be a little late, but Utah fireflies are continuing to light up!

[BybeeLab @BybeeLab]

We were invited to watch land diving in Pentecost. It is to bless the yam harvest. #intense. We’ll name a new species of damselfly after the ritual (see other post) BYU study abroads are amazing!!! @BYUKennedyCtr @BYU @carpophilus

[BybeeLab @BybeeLab]

You are looking at the gnarly hand of my new killer MS student @nsaxton55 which is holding our most recently discovered new species from Vanuatu. We’re going to name it after the local practice of land diving (see next post). #newspecies #Conservation @BYUKennedyCtr @BYU @byubio

[BybeeLab @BybeeLab]

I’m sure it was with flying colors!

[BybeeLab @BybeeLab]

@skbrannoch Totally awesome! We saw this coming many years ago and it is no surprise that you nailed it.

[BybeeLab @BybeeLab]

Odonates everywhere, probably because of water features like this....

[BybeeLab @BybeeLab]

Just finished chasing fireflies in the highlands of Maewo, Vanuatu. 88 captured.

[BybeeLab @BybeeLab]

@paulbfrandsen @PearlJam 100% nirvana

[BybeeLab @BybeeLab]

@paulbfrandsen @pyractomena @dr_firefly @skbrannoch @UCSB_OakleyLab They can. Not sure if they do.

[BybeeLab @BybeeLab]

We also have been working with the marine fireflies here. Check out how almost all of the second to last abdominal segment is bioluminescent. That is a first for me! @pyractomena @dr_firefly @skbrannoch @UCSB_OakleyLab

[BybeeLab @BybeeLab]

@silent_sparks @UCSB_OakleyLab @pyractomena @dr_firefly @skbrannoch Ya they live on the rocks in the intertidal as far as we can tell. But we also think they may actually be living underwater for extended amounts of time hunting. Some bucket experiments show that we have 100% survival in salt water after 14 hours across all stars.

Ambrym Vanuatu

[BybeeLab @BybeeLab]

We spent two days at the top of a volcano collecting. More insects there than you would think

[BybeeLab @BybeeLab]

Walking Sticks have been found on Ambrym! @stickinsect71 obligatory headshots. Two large females.
