Creative Destruction: Pakistan Cannot Build a New Economy by Protecting the Old Order.

Why does Pakistan keep returning to economic crises despite decades of reforms, repeated IMF programmes and countless promises of transformation?

Because we keep trying to repair a system that fundamentally needs to be reinvented.

In my recent conversation with senior journalist Amir Zia on Narratives, we explored why Pakistan needs a fundamental economic and governance reset, driven by what economist Joseph Schumpeter called “Creative Destruction.”

The central argument is simple: Pakistan needs a system that rewards innovation and performance rather than protecting privilege and inefficiency.

Prosperity comes not from preserving the status quo, but from allowing better ideas, institutions and enterprises to replace those that no longer serve society.

Five fundamental changes are essential:

1. From protection to competition: End privileges, rent-seeking and barriers that protect established interests while discouraging entrepreneurs, startups and innovation.

2. From copy-paste to critical thinking: Replace obsolete colonial-era frameworks and borrowed regulatory models with simpler, locally relevant laws and institutions designed for a 21st-century economy.

3. From elite capture to meritocracy: Open economic and political institutions to new talent, competition, accountability and leadership.

4. From a government-dominated to an enterprise-driven economy: Reduce wasteful public expenditure, rationalise taxation and regulation, and prioritise investment in education, healthcare, skills and productive enterprise.

5. From IMF stabilisation to disruptive agenda aimed at sustainable prosperity: Stop treating fiscal targets and external financing as the ultimate measures of success. Judge economic policy by investment, productivity, exports, employment, poverty reduction and human development.

Creative destruction is not about destroying what works. It is about having the courage to dismantle what doesn't—and creating space for something better.

Pakistan's greatest challenge is not a shortage of potential. It is an institutional and economic system that prevents that potential from being realised.

We cannot build a competitive, innovative economy of the 21st century while preserving the privileges, structures and thinking of last century.

The real question is: Are we prepared to reinvent the system—or will we continue managing its recurring crises?
