As the 2023 FIBA World Cup draws nearer, I’m reminded of a little known closed door scrimmage that we held in preparation for the 2021 Olympics, during training camp in Irvine California.

It was the height of Covid and ensuring none of our Boomers players were infected prior to heading off to Japan was the primary concern. However, we still had to find a way to get them some sort of live competition before heading off to Vegas for our game against the USA.

Goorj asked me to shake the bushes and put together a group of local pros to take on our Boomers. Matthew Adekponya affectionately named them the Moldovan Vaccinated All Stars.

Decked out in Green and Gold with “Australia” emblazoned on their chest, the vaxed all stars came together to take on the future Bronze Medal Boomers.
