An 1845 map of downtown Ottawa shows large swampland which had to be drained…

The stagnant swamp water was released through a sluice gate, called the By Wash. Since covered over & forgotten, it coincidentally runs through what is now “RIDEAU STATION” (arrow)

The “ByWash” of swamp water & excess canal water went through the sluice under Rideau Street, through the ByWard Market, and then along what is now King Edward Street, emptying in the Rideau River.

In 1872 it was covered over.
