I am an Assistant Director of ESL and my interests are in education and student learning, including teacher professional development and curriculum writing.
«Schools are so focused on reading comprehension, that the emphasis is on decoding—breaking down the code and seeing that growth in the scores. Oftentimes, the reason why we’re not seeing that growth or we’re seeing it for a little bit and then it stops and we see kids start to fall apart in those upper elementary grades is because educators don’t know to be focusing intentionally on teaching language. » @educationweek@tiffanyphogan

When I was an ESL teacher in a school where students spoke over 20+ different languages, people often asked me how I taught them all English & how many languages I spoke!
Answer: I used content-based language instruction that included comprehensible input & low-stress output.
No need to know every language! But I did need to know every student. ❤️

Just 5 minutes can have a big impact on students’ understanding. Try setting aside some time at the end of a class period for these educator-tested closing activities. 💯 ⏰ https://t.co/b2H6YAQvZ6
Multilingual learners flourish when instruction is deliberately infused with language. When every lesson in each content area provides opportunities for students to listen, speak, read, write, and interact, students have greater chances of becoming successful linguistically and academically.

Just adding more interventionists or coaches won’t solve any systemic reading problems. It isn’t a sustainable fix and you’ll continue hemorrhaging your support bc tier 1 is still insufficient.
Train your teachers.
Efficiently and with the knowledge they’ll need for students.
