Thank you, Minister Jones, for joining CAPA’s Ontario PA Advocacy Day and recognizing the important role Physician Assistants play in strengthening Ontario’s healthcare workforce.
We appreciated the opportunity to discuss key priorities for the profession at Queen’s Park, including expanding PA education and training capacity, supporting policies that enable effective physician–PA collaboration, and establishing sustainable funding frameworks to support PAs within Ontario’s primary care workforce strategy.
We look forward to continuing these important conversations.

Ontario is continuing to take action to protect our healthcare workforce for years to come.

While speaking with the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants, I shared how we are adding up to 150 physician assistant education seats to connect even more people to care.

PAs are helping redefine what primary care looks like in Canada.

At ACCESS Fort Garry in Winnipeg, an interdisciplinary primary care team, including 5 PAs, 13 family physicians, 12 NPs, and other health professionals serve more than 10,000 patients. PAs are core members of the primary care team, delivering integrated, collaborative care that improves access for patients.

@MedicalPost is highlighting this model this month, and CAPA is proud to represent the professionals strengthening healthcare teams and expanding access to care across the country.

This is a proven example of how team-based primary care can expand access, strengthen continuity, and better support both patients and providers. The opportunity now is to scale what is already working.

On April 22, CAPA brought the Physician Assistant profession to the Alberta Legislative Assembly and the conversations we had that day matter.

We were honoured to meet directly with The Honourable @AdrianaLaGrange , Minister of Primary and Preventative Services, and The Honorable @JasonNixonAB , ECA, MLA, Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services, as well as representatives from the offices of The Honourable @Richard4Alberta , Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, and The Honourable @McDougallYYC , BA(Econ), MBA, ECA, Minister of Advanced Education.

We were also proud to welcome to our event: The Honourable @mickeyamery, Minister of Justice. The Honourable @nateglubish , Minister of Technology and Innovation. The Honourable @dtloewen for Alberta, Minister of Forestry. The Honourable @DaleNally_AB , Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction. The Honourable @demetriosnAB , Minister of Education and Childcare. 🚑 Physician Assistants Recognized as Part of the Solution to Strengthening Healthcare in British Columbia

Staffing levels at the Cariboo Memorial Hospital’s emergency department have stabilized, highlighting meaningful progress in strengthening patient care and addressing health workforce challenges across the province.

As healthcare systems evolve, innovative staffing solutions are becoming increasingly important. As noted in a recent report:

Interior Health President , “Weir believes staffing is and will be different in the future with more alternative options sought including nurse practitioners, physician assistants and associate physicians.”

This recognition underscores the vital role Physician Assistants (PAs) play in enhancing access to care, improving efficiency, and supporting collaborative, team-based healthcare across Canada.

CAPA remains committed to advocating for the expanded integration of PAs as part of the solution to Canada’s healthcare challenges.

CAPA is pleased to see our Director of Advocacy and Communications, Kristy Corrente, representing the organization at this important national conversation on health workforce well-being, alongside partners including the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Canadian Home Care Association.

As the Physician Assistant profession continues to grow across Canada, the priorities highlighted will help inform the development of Canada’s Health Workforce Well-Being Plan and reflect what we are hearing from PAs across the country, including the need for supportive work environments, reduced administrative burden, stronger mental health supports, and long term workforce planning.

Physician Assistants are essential contributors to team based care, improving efficiency and enhancing patient access.

We look forward to continuing to collaborate with national partners to advance meaningful, system level change.
