California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO):
Advancing public sector communicators

[California Governor's Office of Emergency Services @Cal_OES]

This week, @Cal_OES worked with partners statewide to support wildfire response efforts, joined state partners and @CAgovernor to highlight California’s response and prevention work on wildfires using technology, and co-hosted professional communicators with @CAPIOTweets for training.

📱 What if the most effective public agency posts aren’t the most “polished," but the most relatable?

Across the country, agencies are moving beyond the digital bulletin board and using pop culture, humor and personality to connect with residents in ways that actually stick.

From meme-inspired moments to playful brand voices, this shift isn’t about humor — it’s about:
✔️ Expanding reach to new audiences
✔️ Increasing visibility for critical updates
✔️ Building trust before it’s needed most

💡 The takeaway: authenticity isn’t a risk, it’s a strategy.
