Australia has a proud legacy of welcoming people seeking refuge.
At a time when cruelty is becoming more common in global responses to displacement, Australia has the opportunity to lead with compassion.
In solidarity, CAPSA celebrates the life and grieve the death of Pope Francis.
His care and compassion for the rights and dignity of refugees has been a consistent priority over the last 12 years. We are grateful for his leadership.

We will continue to advocate for the cost of the continuation and expansion of offshore detention to be redirected to resource other much needed services as part of a more humane migration policy.
In case you missed it, the UN Human Rights Committee recently ruled that Australia remained responsible for the arbitrary detention of people seeking asylum who were redirected or transferred to offshore detention facilities in Nauru.
The UN Human Rights Committee's landmark ruling confirms what we've been saying for years: Australia must be held accountable for the arbitrary detention of of those seeking protection in offshore facilities.
As we highlighted in our submission to the Senate Inquiry into the Migration Amendment Bill 2024, Australia’s policy of offshore detention has caused significant harm since its beginning and compounds trauma for people who’ve already faced serious risk or harm.
@humanrightsHRLC@OzRefugeeCounc Australia is a prosperous and otherwise welcoming country. These bills contravene our responsibility to offer safety and protection to people fleeing danger and harm.

We stand with the @humanrightsHRLC, @OzRefugeeCounc and other refugee and human rights advocates in condemning the passage into law of three migration bills, which will have major consequences for the lives, rights and safety of refugees, people seeking asylum and communities.
🚩🚩 We urgently need your help. The Government is rushing a package of three Bills through Parliament that would have disastrous impact on tens of thousands of people. Before these Bills are considered by the Senate on Wed, please email/call your Senators and tell them: VOTE NO.
We recently made a submission to the Inquiry into the Migration Amendment Bill 2024. We are gravely concerned that passing this Bill could have a serious and irreversible impact on the wellbeing and safety of refugees and people seeking asylum.
