Reps Candidate Olododo flags off Table Tennis Championship across Ilorin East/South LGAs

…as Ibagun, Gambari II, Iponrin and Magaji Are record opening-day victories

The 2027 APC House of Representatives Candidate for Ilorin East/South Federal Constituency, Engr. Abdulquawiy Olododo, on Thursday, officially flagged off the Olododo Table Tennis Championship 2026, a seven-day grassroots sporting competition involving participants from the 23 political wards across the federal constituency.

The first phase was held at the forecourt of Balogun Fulani House, Ilorin South LGA, with Gambari Ward II defeating Balogun Fulani I 3–0, while Ibagun Ward also secured a 3–0 victory over Akanbi Ward II.

In a closely contested encounter, Iponrin Ward edged Akanbi Ward III 2–1, while Magaji Ward also emerged victorious in its opening-day fixture.

Represented at the ceremony by Hon. Kamaldeen Aderibigbe, Engr. Olododo said the championship was organised to promote youth engagement, grassroots sports development, social cohesion and talent discovery across Ilorin East and South local government areas.

He expressed appreciation to the Executive Chairman of Ilorin South LGA, Hon. Abdulmajeed Nuhu Podo, and the Member representing Ilorin South State Constituency, Hon. Mariam Yusuf Aladi, for their presence and support, as well as community stakeholders, party leaders, women and youth groups.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Abdulmajeed Podo and Hon. Maryam Yusuf Aladi commended the initiative, describing it as an avenue to promote unity, youth interaction and sporting development.

The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Hon. Abdulmumeen Akanbi (Pele), said the tournament was primarily designed to identify and nurture emerging table tennis talents across the constituency.

“This tournament is another avenue for us to discover talent across the communities in Ilorin East and South constituency,” Akanbi said.

Akanbi noted that football receives the bulk of attention in Nigeria, while several other sporting disciplines have talented athletes who require opportunities to develop.

He, therefore, thanked Engr. Olododo for providing the support needed to organise the tournament.

One of the leading contestants, Bello Fatimah expressed appreciation to the organisers and Engr. Olododo for sponsoring the tournament, describing the competition as a colourful initiative capable of providing opportunities for young sporting talents.

Among those present at the opening ceremony were Alhaji Issa Nuhu Podo, APC elder in Ilorin South Local Government Area, who led the opening prayer; Acting Speaker of Ilorin South Local Government Council, Rt. Hon. Dare Alao; Members of the Olododo Women Forum; Olododo Progressive Movement; coordinators of the Abdulquawiy Olododo movement and other political and community stakeholders.

The second phase of the championship holds on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Burhanudeen Primary School, Isale-Koko, Ojagboro, Ilorin East LGA.
