Sugar waxing, or sugaring, is an ancient, natural hair removal method using a paste made of sugar, lemon, and water to remove hair from the root. Both cosmetologists and estheticians are able to perform non-medical hair removal services, including sugaring and waxing.
The practice of barbering, cosmetology, and hairstyling do not include natural hair braiding. The Board does not regulate the practice of natural hair braiding.
Braiding service is tension on hair strands/roots by twisting/weaving/extending/locking/braiding provided that the service does not include haircutting or dyes, reactive chemicals, or alter the color of the hair or to straighten, curl, or alter the structure of the hair.
Below are common services hairstylists licensed by the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology may or may not provide. The services listed below are not a full list of all services. It is ultimately a licensee’s responsibility to understand their scope of practice.
Electrolysis is the permanent removal of unwanted facial and/or body hair by the use of a tiny needle or probe that conducts electric current.

And remember: in California, only licensed barbers or cosmetologists can perform haircutting services. The Board of Barbering & Cosmetology requires strict sanitation and safety standards, so you’re getting your cut in a clean, regulated environment.
A few smart prep tips:
☑️Get your haircut 2–4 days before prom so it settles naturally.
☑️Bring photo references — don’t rely on “just do whatever.”
☑️Wash and condition beforehand so your barber can work clean.
☑️Avoid trying a brand‑new style the day of the event.
The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology reminds students to choose licensed professionals who follow proper sanitation and product‑safety standards. Healthy hair and skin matter just as much as the perfect outfit.
Manicuring is the practice of trimming, polishing, coloring, tinting, cleansing, manicuring, or pedicuring the nails of any person or massaging, cleansing, or beautifying from the elbow to the fingertips or the knee to the toes of any person.
The Board does not regulate #Microblading or #CosmeticTattooing.
Microblading is a process typically performed with a combination of needles affixed to a handle which inserts pigment into the skin to manually create lines that resemble eyebrow hairs.
